San Pedro Roman Catholic School to compete at the volleyball district finals
The female and male volleyball teams from the San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School (SPRCS) are gearing up to represent San Pedro Town at the Volleyball District Finals on Thursday, February 15th in Belize City. Both teams emerged victorious at the Belize Rural South Volleyball elimination tournament for Zone 5 (Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker) on Thursday, February 1st held in San Pedro. The sporting event, organized by the National Sports Council also included the participation of male and female teams from Isla Bonita Primary School, Ambergris Caye Elementary School (ACES), New Horizon Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, and Holy Cross Anglican Primary School.

Belize Police Department sets plan to combat crime countrywide
The Belize Police Department (BPD) presented a comprehensive approach to tackle the alarming issue of crime and violence in Belize via the National Crime Fighting Strategy 2018- 2020. The plan has been in the making for quite some time but was not unveiled until Tuesday, February 6th by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The purpose of the plan is to reduce the murder rate and gang violence across the country, as 2017 went on record as one of the most murderous years in history, registering 144 homicides.

Annual Bob Marley tribute concert held on Ambergris Caye
The San Pedro House of Culture hosted their 8th annual tribute to Bob Marley Concert on Tuesday, February 5th at Central Park in San Pedro Town. Every year the Reggae icon is celebrated in various parts of the country in commemoration of his life and his significant contribution to the music industry. In San Pedro Town, the event started at 4PM, with Marley’s music filling the atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed Rastafarian dishes which are large aspect of Marley’s culture. Later in the night local artists took to the stage performing some of Marley’s most popular songs such as, One Love, Is This Love, Get Up Stand Up, and No Woman No Cry among others. “This event serves as a way to remember the great person Bob Marley was as well as the wonderful things he contributed to various societies around the world,” said organizer of the event Ernildo Jones.

School children learn about crocodiles with ACES
The students at The Island Academy (TIA) enjoyed an interactive lesson on Crocodiles on Tuesday, February 6th courtesy of the American Crocodile Education Sanctuary (ACES) team. The senior and junior students learned important facts about American and Morelet crocodiles that are found in Belize. They also had the opportunity to meet ‘Enchilada,’ a rescued baby American Crocodile ACES brought to the presentation. The educational presentation started shortly after 8:30AM with croc wrangler and field biologist Chris Summers from ACES welcoming the students to the session. Accompanying him was Christina Manzi who assisted in the lesson and David Ozier, a volunteer from Canada who is filming ACES’ work for their website. Ozier has extensive experience in the writing and filming of nature documentaries and was more than happy to come to Belize to work along with Summers and his team.

The Belize Police Department takes this opportunity to inform the general public of the policy in respect to police officers working Special Duty at business establishments and major events. BELIZEAN STUDENTS IN TAIWAN ARE SAFE AND SOUND
An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred off the coast of Hualien in eastern Taiwan at 11:50PM on February 6, 2018, causing severe damage. Following the earthquake, President Tsai Ing-wen and Premier Lai Ching-te instructed all government agencies to fully support the rescue efforts and exhaust all possibilities in searching for survivors. The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) wishes to advise that the 136 Belizean students in Taiwan are all safe. There has been no reported injury to any Belizean student so far and the Embassy will continue to monitor the developing situation closely and will update the Government of Belize if any further development.

New Caye Caulker Sign
Met the artists of the new Caye Caulker sign. Should be done today..just have the lobster on the Y to finish. The guy on the left did the concrete work and the other has done the painting. They have done a super job! It's on the North east part of town, at the park about a block from the Split, Next to Caye Reef Condos. Bayron Castellanos was the man in charge of doing the lettering to the guy in the pic Mariano for assisting as his helper and to Maigan for designing it.

BELIZEAN ACCOMMODATIONS AMONG TRIP ADVISOR’S TOP 2018 AWARDS IN THE WORLD AND CENTRAL AMERICAN CATEGORIES
The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) is pleased to announce once more that several Belizean accommodations have been recognized in this year’s TripAdvisor’s 2018 awards list, both at the World and Central American categories. This year Coco Plum Island Resort ranked fourth in the Top 25 Small Hotel, 7th among the Top 25 Hotels for Romance and 9th on the Top 25 Hotels for Best Service in the World Category. BELIZE MARINE CONSERVATION AND CLIMATE ADAPTATION PROJECT (MCCAP)
The Government of Belize, in collaboration with the World Bank (WB) and the Adaptation Fund (AF) is implementing the project entitled “Marine Conservation and Climate Adaptation Project” (MCCAP). Rong's Supermarket on 4th Avenue robbed at gunpoint
Video surveillance camera shows that around 3:25 p.m. this evening three creole male bandidos, two brandishing what appeared to be two guns, proceeded to clean out the cash register at Rong's Supermarket where the owner and his wife were the attendants.. During the ordeal the owner (whose name has not been released) was severley beaten and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police were immediately on the scene and so was the asian/chinese community in Corozal who came out in numbers to support their fallen countryman. Many Corozal residents stopped by to show their solidarity and support against the reckless crime and violence that continues to hurt business in our communities.

Israel’s Killers to Court
Belmopan police have come through again - charging two men today for the murder of public officer Israel Perez. Those men are 33 year old Cruz Castillo and 22 year old Stanely Herrera Jr. The cops have collected a large trove of evidence from Cruz Castillo’s Cotton Tree home – he is the main accused. The evidence gathered so far suggests that Castillo killed Perez and then almost assumed his identity - driving his vehicle, using his tennis shoes, and taking the dead man’s customized medallion - and putting it on his own chain! But the charade ended when police found him handling Perez’s stolen property - and, after a few days of investigation, they gathered enough evidence to charge him and Herrera Jr.. Courtney Weatherburne was at their quite eventful arraignment in Belmopan today.

PUP Bash Bradley For Contract Extensions
Turning now to politics, last night you heard Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley defending his decision to give City Administrator Candice Miller - reportedly a 4 year contract renewal - just as his term is winding down. Now those who study governance and public administration will tell you that for an outgoing elected official - ethically, that’s just not “the done thing.” But, in his defence, The mayor said, quote, “I'm the mayor up until the last day of this month. I do things which I consider to be in the best interest of the City. People may disagree. They may complain, but I am the mayor.” Indeed, Mayor Bradley added that he did it to give security of tenure to all staff at city hall, including, apparently, contract officers.

GOB Gets A Break: Sunshine Case Will Be Heard
On Monday, we told you how the Ashcroft Alliance and the Government of Belize were going back to the Supreme Court to argue over the BTL acquisition yet again. This is now taking place even though the half a billion dollar settlement was supposed to settle all fights over the acquisition of the telecoms company. As we reported, it’s over the Sunshine Holdings Limited, which has swapped ownership from being an Ashcroft Allied entity to being a Government controlled company. Under the Musa Administration, when Sunshine was an Ashcroft Company, it made 2 loans of 10 million dollars each: 1 from the Social Security Board, and the other from the Government itself. The company the used these investment loans to buy shares in BTL.

Sunshine Fight Will Be Highly Complex, Protracted
So, while that was the first round of fights over the Sunshine, what do these attorneys see as the real issues that the court will have to decide on? We asked both sides to summarize their case, and why they think they will win. Here’s how they explained it: Rodwell Williams, SC - Attorney for Sunshine: “Pending before the court were 2 applications 1 by the claimant, Sunshine, to continue the freeze, and for an ancillary order to the freeze, and one by my friends to strike out the claim and He proceeded with the hearing of the application to strike out the claim because if the claim is struck out, then there would be nothing left to discuss about freezing. Mr. Courtenay began his arguments and the court - we had some discussion, and it was felt that in my view, my view, that it was bound to fail, and the court indicated that there was sufficient merit that it should go to trial on the merits. So, rather than expend, time, energy, and money on preliminary issues, we have decided an early trial date. So, we have early trial on the merit. In the meantime, the freeze remains to abide the outcome."

Sunshine Fight Is Really All About SSB Money
So, as you will certainly have deduced, it’s a complex case, but at the end of the day, the Government of Belize has basically been saddled with a 20 million-dollar debt that it did not incur. So, we asked the Ashcroft Attorney why GOB, and by extension, you the taxpayers, are at risk of trying to repay it. Here’s how that back and forth went about why the Ashcroft Alliance, from their perspective, does not owe that bill, even though these loans were made when the Alliance was in control of Sunshine: Daniel Ortiz: "What would you say this interpretation that, okay, these loans were made when BTL under the management and control of the Ashcroft Alliance, and so, why should the Government and people of Belize be on the lam this particular debt that we didn't incur?"

Unitedville Saw A Localized Flash Flood
If you were in Belize City last night you had cool and calm night, but for residents out west - it was very very wet. It rained almost all night and flooded them out. Those affected the most were Unitedville residents - who live close to the creek. The waters rose and inundated their yards, homes and the village bridge. Courtney Weatherburne has more. Unitedville resident Alberto Cocom makes and sells coconut oil – he has his own home-styled factory in his kitchen. He had already made a few buckets and was preparing to make more when last night’s flash flood ruined those batches and washed away most of his coconuts.

Water Rising In the West
And while the Unitedville flash flood was an isolated event - the Cayo District is under close watch tonight because river levels are rising. This is most visible at the Iguana Creek Bridge which continues to rise at this hour. District Coordinator Al Westby told us about the water levels at the dam:.. Al Westby - NEMO Coordinator, Cayo: "Just the last report I got from a BECOL rep that all three dams are rising still. So, that's not...it's good and bad news for us - they're taking in water, but they're not spilling as yet. The Iguana Creek bridge is under water. We have different areas that tributaries come and contribute to these cutoff areas. We have to look at San Marcos, which is a village within the Buena Vista area. There's a lot of families there. We have to look at El Progresso 7 Miles. Anybody who live along the low lying areas, we ask that they heed to these type of waters and take precaution as those people did last night in Unitedville."

PUP National Convention Come Rain Or Shine
But whether the rivers continue rising or not, the PUP is moving forward with its national convention on Sunday. They had already postponed it two weeks ago due to rain - and they aren’t about to do so again. The Party Chairman says it will be a massive event: Henry Charles Usher - PUP Chairman: “Well today we're having our walk through before Sunday's massive national convention. We expect to have over 15,000 and we're preparing for over 15,000 party supporters, members of the public, Belizeans from far and wide to be here on Sunday. It'll be the biggest convention in the history of this country. We're bringing in over 230 buses from outside in the districts and we have to make sure that the buses come in, that they offload their passengers on a timely manner. But I'm looking forward to it. This Sunday is our Superbowl. Last week they had Superbowl in the US, well, this Sunday the PUP is having its Superbowl on February 11th right here at the ITVET.”

COMPOL Cracks Down On Special Duties
It was probably the best racket that the cops had going. It’s called “special duty” - and it’s how all ranks of police officers get paid to use their uniform - and earn extra dollars on the side, tax free. If you’re not familiar with the term - you certainly are familiar with the practice. When you see uniformed police working at bars, nightclubs, or concerts, they’re on special duty, meaning they are earning $12.50 an hour for constables, $ 14.50 per hour for Sergeants, and $15.00 per hour for senior officers. Now, it’s legitimate work, much needed for the maintenance of law and order, and there’s there’s nothing wrong with it. In fact there are provisions for all these requests for police officers to be processed through the police administrative office.

Will Belize Send For Bacchus?
On Tuesday we told you about Canadian Jordan Bacchus. Bacchus was a person of interest in the murder of San Pedro star athlete Melvin Almendarez but fled to his home country of Canada before he could be detained. Bacchus who was also wanted in Canada was found and arrested last week Friday in Ontario Canada. Today, we asked the police about Bacchus's extradition to Belize after he has been processed in Canada. Sahar Vasquez: "Will he be extradited to Belize to face murder charges?"

CDB President Expects Belize To Rebound
Yesterday, we showed you Caribbean Development Bank’s annual press conference from Barbados - where the statistics reflected that Belize’s economy was one of the most sluggish in the region, registering an anemic .6% GDP growth. It was also one of only five countries whose public debt grew in 2017. But still, the CDB’s president remains confident that Belize can juggle growing death and slow economic growth to rebound. He told our colleague from Jamaica Nationwide News Kalilah Enriquez more: Dr. W. Warren Smith, President - CDB: "We have been investing in infrastructure projects in Belize which are very targeted. Belize is a large country compared to the population that it has so the infrastructure needs are great and they have challenges on the social sector side because you have a lot of inward migration into Belize because the borders are pretty open so there's a challenge to try to keep up with the requirements for adequate education and other services to the people of Belize."

Hard Drugs In Little Trinidad
It’s a tiny village in Orange Walk North, but Trinidad was loaded with crack when police went on a search yesterday. The first search was done at the home of 25-year-old Raquelo Gomez. Police found a plastic container that contained 2.4 grams of Crack Cocaine. At the time 36-year-old Marcela Gomez was also present. Police arrested and charged both women with drug trafficking. The second search was at an abandoned lot in the village. They found a small plastic bag containing 40 pieces of crack cocaine. No one was present at the time of the discovery so the drugs were labelled and deposited as found property.

The Wisdom of 104 Years
Sunday, February 4th marked Mary Tate’s 104th birthday. Tate was born in 1914. She dedicated the majority of her life to raising her children and ensuring they got only the best. Tate resides at Sister Cecilia's Home for the Elderly now. She is confined to a wheelchair but she does not let that break her spirit. At 104 Tate is still bursting with energy and endless good humour and grace. We stopped by the home today to celebrate Tate’s incredible milestone.

Rodwell Says It Wasn’t Him
Earlier in the news, we took you to the Supreme Court for the latest fight between the Ashcroft Alliance and the Government over the BTL acquisition and its settlement. Today’s case gave us the first opportunity to ask Rodwell Williams about that BTL Settlement Deed from 2015 which still continues to haunt the Barrow Administration. You’ll remember that when the half-a-billion-dollar BTL settlement was first introduced to the Belizean people, the Prime Minister had an interesting sales pitch. He acknowledged that this was indeed an astronomical figure that the the country would have to pay for the the company, but of that final figure, 60% of it would go into a trust to be used on projects for the people of Belize.

PUP Say Faber Was Intimidating
Last week at the launch of the UDP Manifesto, the ruling party’s Deputy Prime Minister urged voters to cast their municipal ballots for his party’s slates because they can be assured of a good working relationship with a UDP Central Government. It’s an old and true formula for political persuasion - and the PUP rejected it today:.. Henry Charles Usher - PUP Chairman: "We have seen a PUP town council in Orange Walk been able to get the work done, being able to deliver for the people under a UDP central government so the blueprint is there it can work...”

No extradition yet for Jordan Bacchus
Earlier this week we reported on the detention of Jordan Bacchus, a Canadian who is a person of interest to Belize Police in the shooting death of Melvin Almendarez who was killed in San Pedro Town in May of 2016. He was reportedly detained following a raid of a house in Northern Ontario as police looked for drugs. A report indicated that the Sudbury Police would process Bacchus for a drug-related office and that considerations would be made for his extradition back to Belize to be investigated for Almendarez’s murder.

Sunshine’s case to go to trial

Police strategy to disarm criminals

Belize Police Department Launches Nation
A very important conference was held at the Raccoon Street Police Station Conference Room on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. There, Hon. Elodio Aragon Jr., Minister of Home Affairs; as well as COMPOL, Allen Whylie; George Lovell, CEO, Ministry of Home Affairs; senior police officers, and other high ranking officials met to introduce the 2018-2020 Belize Police Department’s National Crime Fighting Strategy. The strategy was launched under the Ministry of Home Affairs with an effort to reduce crime across the country.

195 land titles to city employees
As a “thank you”, 195 workers at the Belize City Council each received a land title on Thursday, February 1, 2018, some of them first time land owners. According to the outgoing mayor Darrel Bradley, the titles were given as an incentive to encourage efficiency and good work within the council employees. The lands, which totaled a 57-acre span and which is an area that was cleared and subdivided with this purpose, is located along mile 13 on the George Price Highway near Tropical Park.

Attempted murder charges dropped after almost 6 years
After being accused of the offense of attempted murder, a Belizean domestic finally got her freedom almost six years later in the Supreme Court when her case ended in a nolle prosequi. That woman, 42-year-old Hilda Locario, was accused of trying to kill Shirley Leslie during a stabbing incident on February 15, 2012. Locario who has been coming to the court for almost 6 years is finally able to put the matter to rest after her last court date on Monday, February 5, 2018.

Israel Perez’s body found in shallow grave
The body of Israel Perez, a 27 year-old resident of Cotton Tree, was found buried in a shallow grave in the Harmonyville Community. The Immigration Dept. employee had been missing for a week until he was found in a shallow grave in the community, which is located at Mile 41 on the George Price Highway, just outside his home village. Shortly before 8 a.m. on Tuesday, February 6, police were called out to area located a short distance off the side of the highway. In a shallow grave, they found Perez’s body in an advanced state of decomposition.

Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Patrick Faber, posted the following on his Facebook page on Thursday February 1: “10 years at the helm of the DFC and not a peep of scandal... in fact it’s the opposite, the CDB gives the DFC, under her watch, the largest loan portfolio ever.... powerful lady... salute to Mrs. Natalie Ewing Goff! CEMO Symposium 2018
The City Emergency Management Organization held their 6th annual Symposium at the Biltmore Plaza on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. Belmopan City Council gets new compactor truck
The Belmopan City Council continues to improve its garbage collection capabilities and this is especially now so with the acquiring of a new Garbage Compactor Truck. This new JAC Brand Garbage Compactor was purchased thanks to $150,000.00 Bz from the Belmopan Municipal Bond. Another garbage compactor will also be obtained, and with the addition of a second Compactor Truck, the Belmopan City Council will not only be able to attend to households in the central area, but also in the periphery. Currently household garbage is collected in central Belmopan on both Mondays and Thursdays and in the surrounding areas such as Salvapan, San Martin, Maya Mopan and Las Flores only on Wednesdays.

Dangriga UDP launches its 2018 – 2021 ManifestoSunday February 4th 2018
The Dangriga United Democratic Party launched its Town Council Elections Manifesto 2018–2021 this afternoon with the theme “Improving Lives, Development You Can See, Transformation you can feel. The gathering was well attended by a throng of ardent UDP family and supporters. Town Administrator Peter Parchue took the role of Master of Ceremonies for the afternoon. Parchue introduced the Nunez sisters and the Garifuna Heartbeats who did an excellent job with the Belizean National Anthem accompanied by the ever present cultural drums. Garifuna branch from San Ignacio holds workshop in Orange walk
The National Garifuna Council, San Ignacio Branch conducted a workshop on Saturday with Garifuna women in Orange Walk to embrace their cultural heritage. The women examined the Garifuna history, language, food, customs, and songs. This is happening as there is already dialogue to launch a Women’s arm in the Hopkins, to be referred to as the Sandy Beach Women’s Cooperative, the first Garifuna Women’s Cooperative in the country of Belize. “Elder women counsel and mentoring the young, I am passing on the legacy through the Grace of God,” says Ellis, who is the President of the National Garifuna Council in San Ignacio and led the team to Orange Walk.

There are two stories going about in Belmopan, the first is that the PUP is fighting to get into the homes of people to campaign and the other is that the UDP is fighting to get out after they get in. Mexican Ambassador talks election, contraband, and Chetumal
With the election of a new president of Mexico just months away, there are several early announcements of candidacies including Jose Antonio Meade, the former Foreign Minister who has visited Belize, and left-wing contender, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. This election will prove to be a different one especially as it relates to the Mexican Diaspora. For the first time in history, the 500,000 Mexicans living outside of Mexico will have the opportunity to vote in this election for the president and senators, a process that has partly been made possible through the efforts of the ambassador.

No policemen to work at sex trade establishments
Police Commissioner Allen Whylie has announced that he will be carefully managing police officers and those special duties that they carry out for the business community. They will now have to strictly comply with the police regulations and apply to him to work these special duties. Readers may know what these special duties are. Police officers often earn extra income, kind of like overtime salaries, by providing security to different business establishments. The problem is that some of these special duties were flagged by the US Government’s Trafficking in Persons (TIPS) Report of 2017. The Belize Government has been working hard to improve the country’s tier 3 grade by the US State Department, which is the worst assessment that the US officials give countries.

Murder trial commences against Norman Slusher
On Wednesday February 7th the sensational murder case of Norman Slusher who is accused of killing a well-known Belize City Car dealer got under way in the Supreme Court of Justice Adolph Lucas in a trial by judge. At the time of the murder Slusher was shot by a patron of Dale’s Barber Shop located at the corner of West Canal and Bishop Street where Jason Canto was when he was shot and killed on May 10, 2012. That patron, was identified as Jose Shoman. The motive for the murder is unknown. Canto was shot as many as eight times to the body. He died on the spot.

Anthony Crawford remanded on gun charge
Anthony Edward Crawford, a 34-year-old figure who has been before the court on numerous occasions, was back in court on Monday, February 5, 2018 and is on remand at the Belize Central Prison on another gun accusation charge. Crawford was arraigned before Magistrate Kadeen Palma for a single offense of aggravated assault with a firearm upon Hubert Velasquez.

Three men remanded for armed robbery
A trio of men was arraigned on Monday, February 5, 2018 for an armed robbery that took place at Highwayman Service Station located in the Lord’s Bank area of Ladyville. The robbery was captured on surveillance camera which led police to the arrest of the three men. Those men have been identified as 25-year-old Jose Cocom Jr., 19-year-old Kentroy McKoy, and 21-year-old Edison Palacio, all of Belize City. The men appeared before Magistrate Kadeen Palma to answer to the charge of robbery with a firearm. The allegations are that Thursday, January 31, 2018 while at the Puma Highwayman Service Station located at Mile 9 ½ on the Phillip Goldson Highway, the men used a firearm to steal $325 cash from one of the workers at the service station.

BDF Soldier fined after allegedly pulling firearm on civilian
A gun related incident has led to the charging of a BDF officer. That officer, Kareem Beeks, was detained and charged pending investigation into a report made by a woman who claims that Beeks pointed the firearm at her. The woman made a call to the police and after giving them a description of the man she claims pointed the firearm at her, the suspect was pursued and detained. That suspect turned out to be Kareem Beeks, a 25-year-old BDF soldier. Beeks was arraigned before magistrate Kadeen Palma on Monday, February 5, 2018 for resisting arrest as well as using indecent words to PC Knox Clark.

Belizean American kills U.S. Marine
Hezron Parks, a 21 year old resident of Phoenix Arizona, in the United States, is facing a charge of second degree murder after he turned himself into the hands of US law enforcement and admitted that he shot and killed a former Marine. Reports to the press are that he has Belizean roots, and that he was raised in the Stann Creek Village of Mango Creek. The incident happened on Sunday, February 4, in Scottsdale, another city in Arizona. According to US press reports, 34 year-old Kyle Brayer, a former Marine and a 10-year veteran of the Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department, was off-duty, and he was riding in a golf cart with friends early that day in Scottsdale. According to the cops, that’s when a man in a red Scion coupe reportedly began tail gating, and nearly hitting the back of the cart.

Murder suspect caught in Canada
Canadian law enforcement have detained 28 year-old Jordan Bacchus, a Canadian who fled from Belize after he was being investigated for the murder of San Pedro Resident Melvin Almendarez. Bacchus had been on the run from Belize Police since May of 2016, when he was first investigated for the murder of the well-known footballer. The Toronto Sun Newspaper, out of Canada, reports that on Friday, February 2, the Greater Sudbury Police executed a search warrant at a home in Northern Ontario. That’s when Bacchus was detained with a woman, and inside the home, the cops found drugs and money. The Canadian newspaper reports that the officers seized 385.45 grams of cocaine and 10.46 grams of “purple heroine”, an extremely potent form of the drug, all to a total street value of 45,000 Canadian dollars.

Law Student is charged for harm
A Law student studying at Wesley Junior College was arraigned this morning in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on two criminal offenses, harm and assaulting a male police officer during an incident at Precinct 1 police station located on Euphrates Avenue on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 1:35 a.m. 23-year-old Shamira Imani Kisses Neal, was arraigned on Wednesday February 7 before Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford. She was unrepresented as she was read two criminal charges, one count of harm and one count of assaulting a police officer, PC Christon Moore.

Love triangle leaves one man hospitalized and the other on remand
A love triangle has landed a teenager before the court on serious charges against his ex-wife’s new boyfriend who he managed to ambush and attack. That teenager has been identified as 18-year-old Elroy Williams, a resident of the Lord’s Bank area. Williams was taken before Magistrate Michelle Trapp on Friday, February 2, 2018 where he was read two criminal and indictable offenses of attempted murder and use of deadly means of harm.

Security Guard stabbed for denying access to the Princess Casino
John Brackett, a 49-year-old construction worker and Prince Street resident, was arraigned on Friday, February 2, 2018 after he was accused of attacking a security guard. Brackett who was unrepresented was arraigned before Magistrate Michelle Trapp where he was read a single charge of attempted murder. The allegation against Brackett is that on Thursday, February 1, 2018, he attempted to murder Kenrick Valencio with the use of a knife. In a report made by the 34-year-old victim, he was on duty at the Princess Hotel and Casino on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 when he refused Brackett entry into the casino due to this behavior.

Belize City Defenders commence 2018 basketball campaign on the right footing
The Pepsi National Elite Basketball League competition continued over the last weekend with three games on the schedule. On Saturday 3 February, 2018, at the St. Catherine Academy Mercy Centre in Belize City, the Belize City Defenders, in its first official game of the 2018 campaign, upended the Orange Walk Running Rebels by the score of 104-76. The Belize City Defenders were led by Nigel Jones who scored 30 points to go along with his 13 rebounds and a steal in his season’s opener. Jones had a supporting cast, which consisted of Francis Arana who scored 14 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists and Brandon Rogers who contributed 13 points towards the win.

Verdes FC open lead in Premier League Closing Season competition
The Premier League of Belize 2017-2018 Closing Season continued over the last weekend with three games on the schedule. On Sunday 4th February, 2018, at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio Town, the defending champions and the league’s leading Verdes FC continued its dominance of the competition when it blanked the host team Placencia Assassins FC by the score of 2-0. The first goal of the game was scored by Alcides Thomas in the 8th minute of play to give his team a 1-0 lead. Verdes FC took the lead into the half time break and in the opening minutes of the second half, Elroy Kuylen scored his team’s 2nd goal of the game in the 47th minute of play for the white-wash win.

Belize Elementary and Hummingbird Elementary boys and girls lead in primary schools volleyball competition
The Belize City Primary Schools Volleyball competition continues at the Stars Gym in Belize City. On Tuesday 6th February, in the only game played in the girls’ competition, Belize Elementary School won over St. Joseph School by the score of 25-17 and 25-23. In the first of two games played in the boys’ competition, Belize Elementary School defeated Bethel Primary School by the score of 25-6 and 25-20. And in the second game of the day, St. Ignatius School won over Queen Square Anglican School via the default route.

Football Federation of Belize host FIFA Instructor
On Saturday February 3, 2018 over 30 referees gathered at the Marion Jones Stadium for a physical fitness test conducted by FIFA Instructor Erick Samayoa. While the test was initially designed for our two international referees, interest spread very quickly and thus over 30 referees showed up. In the end 5 assistant referees passed and 3 referees as well. These numbers should not be seen as an indictment of the referees but more as an incentive to keep up their training to become physically fit since for most this was the first time participating in this test.

Anything can happen
Last time I related a story about a neighborhood acquaintance whom people in the Union Town Area dubbed with the name “Rogers”, because of his resemblance to the Country and Western singer. I made a joke about how he hustled the PUP campaigners for his rent money. In truth I sympathize with all politicians when elections come around since about 5% of voters see this as an opportunity to bleed the candidates for cash or kind. I remember my own stint in 2006 when I used to come home from work at 5 in the evening and meet a group of people waiting for me with all sorts of health maladies; needing medical attention or to fill out prescriptions. One particular man I personally knew to be an addict actually produced a paper from a doctor that he urgently needed medication. One dumb cry over and over and over i.e. you can’t eat streets and that too much is spent on roads, bridges, stadiums, sporting facilities, etc. That political position is just silly, foolish, stupid, nonsense... especially since they built nothing that looks decent. Their bridges have fallen into the water, their houses lean and their housing projects have been taken over by termites! BILLIONS stolen, that is what you have to remember on Election Day! PUP Shook
shook. adj. scared, afraid, hesitant. “They scared to death, they scared to look, they shook... cause ain’t no such thing as halfway crooks.” Mobb Deep, Shook Ones According to the talk in the street and using an urban slang, the PUP is SHOOK. With less than a month left to Municipal Elections it is clearly being seen that the LEADERSHIP and the supporters of the PUP are running scared and are now desperate. They appear to be willing to do anything to try and salvage some more votes in order not to suffer too much of a large defeat. In their desperation they first began to try and turn the people against the UDP by saying that the things that have been done by the present UDP administered Councils was not beneficial to the residents of those municipalities.

Structure not ad-hoc agendas key to US-Caribbean relations
Much has been said about the government of the United States of America (US) cutting off aid to countries that do not support that country’s position in international organizations. The US, of course, is free to direct its aid where it wishes and very much within its rights to show its displeasure with countries that take its money but don’t support it. Other donor countries have the same view, although they do not express it in quite the same way as the US government now makes clear. Aid, after all, seldom has moral considerations. Economic aid, in particular, was introduced in the world because it merged with the desire of rich countries to maintain access to markets of developing countries and to garner political influence over them.

San Pedro’s PUP 7 hosts Love Fest
The Belize Rural South People’s United Party (PUP) slate hosted a Love Fest at Boca Del Rio Park on Sunday, February 4th. The event saw a large crowd of supporters enjoying a day full of activities. Present at the event was the PUP town council aspiring candidates, Andre Perez, Ruben Navidad, Ian Pou, Marina Kay, Danieli Aranda, Johnnia Duarte, and Undina Dina Duarte. The ceremony started at 2PM with the singing of the national anthem, followed by a short invocation. Thereafter, Master of Ceremony Alex Nunez welcomed everyone and invited the six councilor candidates one by one to the podium to share some words. The first candidate of the afternoon was Ruben Navidad, who shared a little bit on all the issues that Ambergris Caye is presently facing. “I would like to highlight the issues that our community is going through, as we all know them. Issues such as poor street conditions, the amount of garbage, bad infrastructure and much more. I just want to tell everyone that if they are ready for a change and a new San Pedro Town to vote PUP 7 on March 7th.” said Navidad.

San Pedro Co-Ed Softball Tournament finals draw near
With only one more week left before the regular season of the San Pedro Co-Ed Softball Tournament comes to an end, two matches were held this past weekend on Sunday, February 4th at the Hon. Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex in San Pedro Town. The current standings have Quality Reef at the top with four wins and one loss, followed by RCGO with three wins and two losses. Extreme has two wins and three losses, and at the bottom of the chart is SPHS with one win and four losses. Games continue this weekend on Sunday, February 11th, starting at 9AM with Extreme going against Quality Reef, followed by SPHS taking on RCGO at 11:30AM. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy the last game of the regular season of the tournament.

San Pedro Red Cross hosts first blood drive of the year
A total of 12 pints of blood were collected on Saturday, February 3rd, during the first blood drive of the year held at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Polyclinic II. Organized by the San Pedro Belize Red Cross (SPBRC), the event had a good turnout, with the majority of the participants donating the precious liquid. It is known that just a single pint of blood can save up to three lives, thus, the SPBRC strives to build the island’s blood supply at the Belize Blood Bank. Volunteers assisting the drive also held a dollar drive on the streets of downtown San Pedro, collecting $1,949.14.

San Pedro Pirates F.C. celebrate first victory of the PLB closing season
After three straight losses, the San Pedro Pirates F.C. finally managed to earn a victory on Sunday, February 4th. The Pirates defeated the Belize Defense Force (BDF) with a 2-1 point score at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town in the fourth match of the Premiere League of Belize (PBL) closing tournament. The current standing of the PLB have Verdes F.C at the top with 12 points, followed by the Belmopan Bandits and Police United F.C with seven points each. Freedom Fighters F.C have six points and Placencia Assassins have five points, while Belize Defense Force and San Pedro Pirates F.C have three points each and Dangriga Wagiya F.C is yet to make it on the chart. For the fifth week of the PLB, the San Pedro Pirates F.C will face the Verdes F.C at the Norman Broaster Stadium in the Cayo District on Sunday, February 11th.The game is scheduled to start at 4PM. Capital Cops Closing In On Perez Killer
Belmopan police are making headway in Israel Perez's murder case. As we told you last night, police had detained a man because they found Perez's vehicle as well as a few of his belongings at the man's St. Matthews Village home. Well today, Cruz Castillo was charged with handling stolen goods - specifically, property of Israel Perez. He was remanded until Friday. Now while it is not the murder charge his family and friends were expecting - police say this first charge can give them more time to investigate and confirm if Castillo will also be charged for Perez's murdered. The two may have known each other. We will keep following the case.

Mayor Bradley “Topped Up” City Manager Before Leaving Office
Right now, the Municipal Election cycle is in full swing, and with only 1 month to go, the electioneering is in high gear. And with the campaigning comes the political mudslinging and finger pointing. Tonight the finger is on Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley. He isn't running for a third term, but many in his council are, and so, the Opposition is criticizing him for recently renewing the contract of the City Administrator, who only had a few months left. It's widely held that an outgoing elected official should not be allowed to sign a contract which extends the employment of senior staff beyond the life of his term. We caught up with the Mayor at another event and asked him about it. In typical style, he said that he makes no apologies for it:

Mayor Won’t Go There With Waste Control
So, while the Mayor was willing to give security of tenure to those senior staffers at City Hall, he's not willing to touch the Council's commercial arrangement with the sanitation company, Belize Waste Control. Their 10 year-contract with the Council, to collect the city's garbage has expired, and they are seeking to renew it. When the press asked the Mayor about that, he said that he doesn't think that his administration has enough time to properly review and consider all the implications of such a contract. So, the Mayor is leaving that one to his successor. Here's how he explained it: Alindy Marisol Amaya - KREM News: "I think it's the Waste Control contract that was expired will be renegotiated until..." Darrell Bradley - Mayor, Belize City Council: "It actually is being renegotiated because their lawyer has written me."

Jason Canto’s Alleged Killer On Trial
Jason Canto was killed in a barbershop on the canal side in May of 2012. On Monday, Norman Slusher went on trial without jury for his murder. But, the interesting wrinkle in the case is that Slusher was also shot in the melee. In court today, the police witness stated his belief that the man who shot him - was another armed patron at the barber shop, businessman Jose Shoman. The motive for the murder is not certain but Canto was shot as many as eight times to the body. A trail of blood led police to an abandoned house where the injured gunman sought refuge after being shot. Police Inspector Ishmael Westby said that one gun was found at the scene, and said he later met businessman Jose Shoman at the police station, where he had handed over his licensed 9 millimeter pistol.

Cycling Federation Foes Appear
There's an ongoing battle in the Belize Cycling Federation - and lawyer's letters are flying back and forth. Tariq Cano's attorney Hector Guerra has written to President Dion Leslie saying that the Federation is being run without proper organization or transparency. He claims that the Federation has failed to produce financial records, failed to hold elections as prescribed, failed to regularize its constitution, has put no program in place for selecting cyclists for the national team, and failed to send cyclists to the Caribbean Championships for over two years. Cano and his attorney held a press conference at the Marine Parade Law Chambers today. They say that accountability is the central issue:

Cops Catch Cannabis
Last night at 8:40, police found a stash of weed and guns on their Belama area search. They started out on Maurice Bishop Street where they found a plastic bag with 4 ounces of weed at a bushy lot. Later on, on Apollo Street in Belama Phase 4 police found a plastic bag with 1 chrome 9mm pistol with one 9mm Magazine. They also found another bag with (1) .38 revolver with a wooden handle containing (6) .38 special rounds of ammunition along with one 7.62 round of ammunition.

CDB Says Belize’s Economic Growth Below Regional Avg.
The Caribbean Development Bank today held its annual press conference at tis headquarters in Barbados. It's an annual event where the bank reviews the performance of its 19 members countries. This year, the Bank's President and Chief Economist said that the region's performance - as a whole - was far from stellar - and Belize's economy - with .5% growth was bringing up the rear - which is just about the regional average: Dr. W. Warren Smith, President - CDB: "They expanded - that is our regional economies - on average, by 0.6%, with all but five BMCs reporting output growth in 2017. For the majority of our BMCs, this growth was driven by tourism and increases in commodity prices. The prognosis is even better for 2018, with all of these countries expected to grow by around 2%. In a sense, and certainly in terms of economic growth, the Region is in the strongest position since the start of the 2008 global recession."

Cotton Tree Family Wants Answers
Husband and wife Oscar Alvarado and Linda Hernandez were knocked off their motorcycle and killed on Christmas Eve night in Cotton Tree. They were heading to their San Martin home in Belmopan when a vehicle rear ended them. As we have reported, 25 year-old Cotton Tree resident Hector Armando Monterroso has been charged in this case. But the family says there's another element that the police hasn't addressed. Alvarado's father told us that based on the information he has gotten, he believes police accidentally drove over Hernandez with the police truck as they arrived on the scene after the accident.

Beauty Queen In Ugly Mix-Up
She was a beauty queen in 2015, but Shamira Neal was involved in an ugly altercation with a police officer a few days ago. The 24 year old law student who represented Belize at the 2015 Miss United Continents Pageant, was charged with harm and assaulting a police officer when she appeared today before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. Neal pled not guilty to the charges. She was released on a bail of $1,000 and her case was adjourned until April 4. Police constable Criston Moore alleged that on February third, he was escorting a minor to the police station, when Neal - who is the minor's sister - slapped him in the face and assaulted him. Moore's injury was classified as harm.

Banking On Boots in Port Loyola
It's a month to the municipal elections, and - depending on where you live - it's quite likely that political campaigners have come to your door - begging for that vote, and promising to fix your drain, or maybe even pave your street. This evening, in Port Loyola, though, it wasn't about the small promises; it was about the big show that four time Representative Boots Martinez put on to send a message that - despite a close call in the last general election - he still runs things in the Port. We challenged him on that. Jules Vasquez has the story:... Rolling down the Jane Usher Boulevard, Boots Martinez and the UDP Slate were shored up by a throng of campaigners. The City Emergency Management Organization held its 6th annual Symposium on Disaster Preparedness. CEMO invited its sister agencies to discuss how they can better serve the residents of Belize City in the event of a natural disaster, as the country's largest populations center. We stopped by the opening ceremony and asked the Mayor and the main speakers about always planning around the unpredictable forces of nature:

Yesterday, the Ahmad family called a press conference to publicly press the police to push harder to find what they insist is a true, hidden motive behind the murder of Fareed Ahmad. His wife Irma Dyer spoke publicly for the first time - and she said that her husband was very angry after he had been searched and humiliated by the Special assignment Team - and that he had a foreboding of his death by police:... Irma Dyer - Fareed's Wife: "He was very angry, we talked about it. He spent hours telling me what they did to him and of course I felt so bad and it got to the point where he was asking me. He said, Irma "I can't figure out why are they harassing me."

Police Push For Reforms
Last night, we also had an in-depth look at the Police Department's 2018 - 2020 National Crime Fighting Strategy. It's a new focus for the department as it tries to combat major crimes, and the technocrats in the Department and the Ministry took 2 years to put it together. It's such a densely packed list of changes that we were not able to get to all of them in our coverage from yesterday. So, we have a bit more of it for you tonight. Here's how Police Commissioner Allen Whylie explained how his department intends to deal with gun control, and the prosecution of gun related offenses: Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police: "The Belize police department will aggressively seek to eliminate the proliferation of illegal guns and ammunition country-wide through the collection and analysis of intelligence. The Belize Police Department will ensure that all guns upon being presented for renewal of licenses are test fired and the results entered into he integrated ballistic identification system...."

OW Police Substation Soon To Be Inaugurated
Earlier this month we reported that after several years, individuals who reside on Cemetery Street here in Orange Walk Town will benefit from a fully functional police substation. The initiative is one that was proposed by the Orange Walk Town Council after numerous concerns were raised by residents in the area as it relates to the issue of criminal activity. The proposal was warmly welcomed by the Orange Walk Police Department which joined forces along with the council and the business community to ensure that the work is carried out. As you can see from the footage… today, the project has come a long way as the old building which previously served as a substation a few years ago, has now been rehabilitated and is expected to be officially inaugurated on Monday February 12th, 2018. The aim of the initiative is geared towards allowing officers to promptly respond to reports and incidents in the immediate and surrounding areas, while building a safer community.

Fire Victims Appeal For Assistance
In the wee hours of Friday February 2nd, a family of 12 in San Antonio Village in the Corozal District woke up to the nightmare of their home being engulfed in flames. The family made up of six adults and six children barely made it out alive, and in fact a six year old boy had to be rescued by his mother who had just delivered a baby a week ago and who underwent C-section. She recalls having to go from being bed-ridden with pain, to jumping out a window to save herself and then returning into the fire to rescue her son.

Businesses In The Free Zone Are Closing Down Says Mexican Press
The economic situation in Belize will become the central focus in a few weeks when the 2018/2019 budget is read at the end of the fiscal year. With the debt to GDP ratio having ballooned to 100% and our productive sector still facing challenges, it will undoubtedly be another budget with little economic impetus and perhaps the need to hike tax revenue generation even more than last year. One local sector in the north that continues to feel the effects of the economic downturn is the Commercial Free Zone in the Corozal District. A report in the Por Esto newspaper in Quintana Roo this week, noted that various Mexican-owned businesses have shut their doors and exited the Zone. The report notes that dozens of businesses can be seen decorated with For Rent or For Sale signs for many months now.

Apolonio Kiow Back In Court
The prosecution case for the murder of Canadian national 38 year old Gabriel Buchnia, which occurred on October 4th last year, continues in its preliminary stages. On Monday, the suspect, 52 year old Apolonio Kiow returned to court as the prosecution prepares to present its case for the murder trial to proceed. Kiow has been on remand at the Hattieville Correctional Facility since October 10th last year when he was arraigned before Magistrate Patricia Arana, following the laying of charges by the prosecution.

Pack for a Purpose, Change a Child’s Life
We at Ka’ana are firm believers that our children are our future. That’s why we’ve partnered with Pack for a Purpose, an international non-profit that helps the travel industry support local schools. Our relationship with the organization began in 2011, when our staff decided to do something for the children at Holy Cross Elementary School, a mere ten minutes down the road in Calla Creek Village. Of the school’s 70-plus students, all between the ages of 4 and 13, only a handful could afford tuition. The school doesn’t turn children away, though, so it suffered from a severe lack of resources. After visiting, and witnessing the poor shape of its preschool restrooms, Ka’ana resolved to repair them as our first project. Since then, the school has become dear to us, and guests have picked up on the close connection. When they learned that the school needed supplies, travelers sent them to us, or brought them in their suitcases on their next visit.

Football Federation of Belize reports recent activities
The Football Federation of Belize (FFB) held its first meeting with members of Congress for the presentation of the 4-year plan for football for Belize. The session was opened by President Sergio Chuc who welcomed all members and introduced the new Technical Director Phillip Marin. Mr. Marin became the Technical Director with effect from February 1, 2018. Mr. Marin was also named Ambassador of the International Coaching Course (ITK) in January of this year. This course is supported and sponsored by the Federal Foreign Office, Germany. Mr. Marin introduced program plans for 1. Grassroots, 2. Youth football, 3. Women’s football, 4. Futsal and beach soccer, and 5. Coaching Education.

Mountain Bike Adventure to be filmed in Belize
A mountain bike adventure will be filmed by European Nature Trust in hopes of advocating the protection of the rich diversity of wildlife in Belize. The biking adventure will be filmed by Dylan Haskin along with a team of 12 riders expected to arrive in the country on Sunday, February 4th. The team will be filming the mountain bike adventure from the 5th through to the 11th of February. People can watch the adventure by following The European Nature Trust on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. They will be using the three platforms to share the content from experience using the hashtag #bikebelize2018.

San Pedro Tiger Sharks net their third win in the 2018 NEBL season
The San Pedro Tiger Sharks continue excelling in the 2018 National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) season, landing their third consecutive victory after defeating Smart Belize Hurricanes on Saturday, February 3rd. The island team faced the visiting team at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium, where after four quarters of intense action on the court, the Tiger Sharks sealed the game with a final score of 73-58. The game was the first 2018 NEBL match on the island, attracting a large crowd of spectators to the auditorium. When the official whistle blew, the game tipped off at 9PM. In the first minutes of the match, the Belize Hurricanes were aggressively challenging the Tiger Sharks, but the home team managed to steal the first quarter with a 20-14 score. By halftime, the island team went back to their locker rooms with a comfortable lead of 40-24 thanks to consecutive 3-point shots by Douglas Valley.

Political Rally Discloses PUP Development Plans For San Pedro
With just about a month to go before town council elections, the People United Party (PUP) held a huge political rally which was called Love Fest No.1. The theme of the Love Fest was: ‘One Love, One Soul, One People, that's the sound of PUP’. The focal point of the rally was, of course, addresses by each and every councilor candidate and Mayoral candidate. Each one spoke of their plans of development that will bring progress to the lives of the entire San Pedro and Ambergris Caye. The plans include much needed street improvement with pavement and drains, an organized garbage collection, improved services at the poly clinic with a final goal of having a full time hospital on the island, organized programs to have children and youths engaged in positive learning in library and resource center, organized programs to assist the elderly, organized programs to assist single mothers, job placement opportunities resource center, a shadow youth town council to engage youths in leadership, community engagement and even political involvement and more sporting facilities. All of these plans and others were received with thunderous applause by the audience.

Belize fishers cooperative closes RFP for traceability system
The National Fishermen Producers' Cooperative Society of Belize (NFC) recently closed a request for proposals from vendors of traceability technology. The RFP was launched in search of technology solutions that would assist the NFC in product-data pairing, internal traceability, and verification. The NFC, in its RFP document, explains that these objectives would in turn aid in achieving the wider goal of greater operational efficiency and market access. “The effort to implement traceability will coincide with marketing efforts and development of new buyer relationships,” the document states.

BTEC Announces the Completion of its Wait Staff and Housekeeping Training Programmes
The Belize Training and Employment Centre (BTEC), a unit of the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE), today, completes its Wait Staff and Housekeeping and Janitorial Services Trainings which provided participants with skills to equip them for employment in the hospitality industry. These three-week trainings were held simultaneously and covered soft skills, customer service as well as industry specific technical skills where trainees were taught the essentials of perfecting their trade. Today, BTEC held a certificate ceremony to celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of the forty six successful participants.

Missing Man Israel Turns Up Dead
The Perez family's worst fear was confirmed today: Israel Perez's body was found this morning in Harmonyville. They had to bury him quickly because his body was badly decomposed. 7news was there on the scene and at the burial site. Courtney Weatherburne has more. Immigration and Lands Department workers along with Health officials filed into to the Cotton Tree cemetery this afternoon - all to give their final goodbye's to their friend and beloved member of the public service fraternity, Israel Perez. Perez had been missing for a week but this morning around 7:00 one of his close friends found his decomposed body down this road in Harmonyville. It was buried in this shallow grave. His friend, who lives close to where Perez's body was found says he saw Perez's vehicle down this road several times last week but he didn't think much of it because he didn't know Perez was missing until he saw it on the news last night. That's when he and his son went on their own early morning search.

Police Speak On Israel Death
Before that detention, police gave a statement earlier this morning on this case. Here's more. ACP Joseph Myvette, Head - NCIB: "This morning shortly before 8am, police was called to the Harmoneyville area, where in a shallow grave the decomposed body of a Hispanic male was found which was later identified to be missing Belmopan resident Israel Perez. Police are still on the scene and the investigation is ongoing. Also one person has been detained for questioning in regards to this discovery." As you heard, one person is detained and will face non-murder charges tonight.

Ahmad Family Says No ‘Affair’ Between Fareed and Michelle Brown
Well known barber and community activist Fareed Ahmad was killed 40 days ago under mysterious circumstances. Police constable Michelle Brown - who was the passenger in his vehicle on the night of his death - has been charged for his murder. But, that's far from the end of the story. There is a deeper tangle of uncertainty which centers around one question: how did the Constable get into his vehicle? Did she and Fareed have a relationship? It seems simple enough - but it's complicated by the fact that Michelle Brown was a member of the Special assignment Team - a unit that Fareed had made a complaint against hours before he was killed. Jules Vasquez reporting: Today, the family said they have clarity: there was no relationship between the two. Jules Vasquez was at the press conference: Today the family of Fareed Ahmad - his father, sister, brother - and, for the first time - his wife of 14 years - came forward to demand that police properly investigate his death.

The 21st Is Nomination Day
Municipal elections are only a month away, and, in two weeks, the political parties will have their first chance to flex their muscle on the streets of the different municipalities. That's February 21st., nomination day. It's a political carnival full of scenery and mass party noise, but the day is really about a simple process: filling out a nomination form, getting two registered voters to nominate the candidate, and paying a deposit of fifty dollars. Nomination will be held at public offices and locations in all the cities and towns, namely: the Charles B. Hyde Building, in Belize City, the Civic Centre, in Belmopan, the Administration Building in Corozal Town, the Sub-Treasury, in Orange Walk Town, the Administration Building in San Ignacio Town, the Town Hall, in San Pedro, the Town Hall, in Benque Viejo, the Town Hall, in Dangriga and the Administration Building in Punta Gorda.

Police Present New Anti-Crime Strategy Targeting Gangs
2 weeks ago, police released the official crime statistics for 2017, which showed 142 total murders, three fewer than the all time high set in 2012. Belize City had the most murders, and most of them were related to gang violence. So, the Police Department and the Home Affairs Ministry have been under sustained pressure to come up with quick fix solutions for a generational problem whose roots run deep into the swamp of social decay and structural poverty. Police had been hinting for months that a major legislative shift in the way they fight crime was on the way, and today, their new National Crime Fighting Strategy was unveiled by Commissioner Allen Whylie at a press conference featuring Police Minister of State Elodio Aragon. Cops Can’t Work Special Duty Without COMPOL’s Say-So
The Government of Belize continues to wrestle with its Tier Three Human Traffic rating from the US State Department. And one area that needs urgent attention is the practice of police working security at bars where human traffic victims are employed as waitresses and engage in commercial sex work. For the police it's called special duty - and it earns regular cops big money from private companies and establishments - as much as 10 dollars per hour. But while it's a welcome stream of income for those officers, the 2017 trafficking in persons report noted that this practice sends a message that police are on the side - and on the payroll - of the traffickers. We got reports last week that the police senior command was cracking down on this practice - and prohibiting police from working security at those shady establishments. Today we asked the commissioner if indeed such a directive was sent. He wasn't happy with the question:

Labour And Capital Sit To Hammer Out OSH
The Occupational Safety and Health Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives almost four years ago - but it still hasn't been passed. And that's because the bill will bring sweeping changes to rules governing the workplace, and both employees and employers have to be on the same page. A promising step has been taken in that direction with the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize agreeing to form an Occupational Safety and Health working committee. According to a release, they will, quote, "review and arrive at a final position on the OSH Bill that is agreeable to all relevant stakeholders."

Prime Minister Dean Barrow has left the country in personal leave. According to a release from his office, "Prime Minister Barrow, accompanied by Mrs. Kim Barrow, is on a private visit to attend to some personal family matters." The PM returns on Friday and Deputy Patrick Faber will be holding over as Prime Minister.

BTEC Trains Service Sector Employees
After three weeks of training, 46 participants successfully graduated from a Wait Staff and Housekeeping workshop hosted by BTEC. The participants ranged from veterans in the hospitality industry to newcomers who were hungry to learn. We found out more about what they learned: Christine Smith, Manager of BTEC: "Housekeeping, we assume that everyone knows how to clean but there is a skill to cleaning and the skill to cleaning is not just move dirt around but to actually get rid of germs and make sure that you have a clean environment for persons who are there. The training covered the Green Clean, what are the products we use for cleaning, what are the harms of some of these products, and then it went into a full practice on how to clean properly."

BPP Goes Humble But Heartfelt For Municipals
As we told you earlier in the news, Wednesday February 21st is nomination day for the municipal elections. For the major mass parties - it's a day to test who can mobilize the crowds. But you won't see the third party, the BPP there showing off with any big crowds. That's because they're not about that big money politics. Today at a press conference to launch their municipal campaign, the party told the media why they are fielding only 18 candidates in 5 towns and cities: Patrick Rogers Leader - BPP: "More than half the people registered in these constituencies do not reside at the elections and boundaries address on record. So, when you talk about canvassing to do a campaign, you will find that it's an exercise in futility because the elections cannot be free if they are not fair and giving an alternative part to that, that don't have money to hand out an election day, only a message to try and reach the people before the election day. A list that is compromised is a waste of time."

Wanted Canadian Arrested In Toronto
Back in May of 2016, San Pedro Town was shaken when the well-known footballer, Melvin Almendarez was shot and killed. The main suspect, Jordan Bacchus, left the country and went back to his home country of Canada. Well, reports out of that country are that Bacchus is now in the custody of Canadian law enforcement. The San Pedro Sun Newspaper reports that Baccus was taken into custody in Ontario on last week Friday. He was detained by the Greater Sudbury Police along with another woman, during a raid at a residence in Northern Ontario. The cops were reportedly conducting a search for drugs on that home.

Arizona Killer Is From Belize
Over the weekend, 34-year-old, American Kyle Brayer was shot in the head and died in Scottsdale Arizona. There was a massive manhunt for the killer but the hunt is over because he turned himself into authorities and reports say he is a Belizean that grew up in Mango Creek. He is 21 year old Hezron Parks. Parks told Arizona police that he was heading home after spending time a clubs in the Scottsdale area when Brayer who was sitting in a golf cart started saying things to him. BSI Addresses Concerns Of Chan Pine Ridge Residents
The Belize Sugar Industries has conducted an internal investigation as it relates to the disposal of waste material found on the Chan Pine Ridge road, following several claims made by residents of the area who were alleging that the company is responsible for dumping what appears to be black soil on the edges of the main road which connects the village to Orange Walk Town. Following the investigation, BSI has come to the conclusion that the material found on the Chan Pine Ridge road is not black soil, but waste material coming out from the filter press at the factory. Today we contacted BSI to inquire about the matter and were informed that the company employs a private contractor who is responsible for discarding the material and is also tasked with selecting a designated location to do so.

Did Pablo Marin Award Roundabout Project Work In Corozal Town to Cayo Contractors?
For several weeks we’ve been reporting on the construction taking place along a roundabout near the Santa Rita area of Corozal Town. The project isn’t being carried out by the Corozal Town Council, but by Area Representative Pablo Marin, so there is very little information available or forthcoming about the source of funding or the cost of the project. What we do know is that the project doesn’t have the unanimous blessing of the local tourism committee who is the body responsible for any tourism-related project in the municipality. Leaked copies of their meetings have shown that members have questioned how Marin came up with the idea and design, if they nor the public was consulted. Members of the public have also expressed concern that the site could create a problem for the heavy traffic in the area.

Date Set For Nomination Day
The Elections and Boundaries office has released the details of the Municipal Elections Nomination Day exercise scheduled for Wednesday, February 21st 2018 in all municipalities. Nomination Day is held for hopefuls to officially become candidates once they meet the criteria. For Corozal and Orange Walk Towns, the nomination of candidates will take place from 10am to 4pm. The Returning Officer for Corozal Town is Alma Gomez, while for Orange Walk Town it is Hugo Miranda.

PM Barrow On Personal Leave
Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow in the company of his wife, Kim Simplis Barrow, departed the country earlier today on personal leave. PM Barrow is scheduled to return to Belize later this week on Friday, February 9th, 2018. As is customary, during his absence from the country, Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Patrick Faber will act as Prime Minister.

Burglars Target Red Cross Corozal Branch Office
The Red Cross Corozal Branch is preparing for a Valentine’s Day fundraiser lunch next week, but today the community organisation learnt that some individuals just don’t have any love to give. Today Red Cross officials found their office building situated in the Santa Rita area of the town broken into and fully ransacked. The burglar or burglars targeted the office by prying open the wooden doors that led to the storage rooms and then ransacked the building in search of valuables. They had access to donated supplies, some electronic devices and other items but at the end of the day, it appears that only a few soft drink bottles and crates were moved and taken.

Belize Magistracy experiencing chronic shortage of magistrates
The new Criminal Procedure Rules which came into effect during the last legal year for dealing with cases at the Supreme Court and Magistrate’s Court were designed to address the massive backlog of cases. As it now stands, the rules mandate that disclosure must be given as quickly as possible and new cases must be disposed of within a timeframe of six months from the time of arraignment to completion of the case. The Criminal Procedure Rules, however, will do no good in addressing the backlog of cases if there are fewer judges and magistrates to enforce them, and new cases continue to overwhelm an already clogged-up criminal justice system.

Israel “Prince” Perez, 27, still missing after 8 days
Today marks eight days since St. Matthews’ villager Israel “Prince” Perez, 27, left home and has not returned. Today, Amandala spoke with his brother, Orlando Perez, who told us that the last time he saw his brother was Saturday, January 27, which was one day before he was reported missing. He recounted that his brother had visited his barbershop in Belmopan, as he would normally do before he goes home. However, he left at about 9 p.m. after declining an invitation to go to a nightclub.

Civil Service Credit Union “bites the dust”
Last April, the Central Bank of Belize announced that it would be liquidating the Civil Service Credit Union in Belize City, which has been in existence since the early 1950s. Today, Amandala spoke with the chief liquidator and accountant, Cedric Flowers, who provided an insight into the ongoing process. He said that due to mismanagement, the Central Bank ordered the credit union to close down its operation. And so for now, the company isn’t functional, but hasn’t been declared bankrupt; instead, it is insolvent because it cannot pay its bills. For now, one part-time employee handles the administrative affairs of the business.

Fugitive Jordan Bacchus arrested in Canada
He is a wanted fugitive in Belize, on the run for almost two years, but he may soon be extradited to Belize for murder after he was arrested in Canada and charged for illegal drugs. On Friday, Canadian national Jordan Bacchus, 28, was busted by police in Northern Ontario with 384.45 grams of cocaine and 10.46 grams of “purple heroin” which is heroin mixed with the extremely potent opioid fentanyl. These drugs have a street value of $45,000 Canadian dollars. According to Drug Squad Det.-Sgt. James Killeen, during the search his officers also seized $25,000 in cash along with other evidence, including digital scales, detailed debt lists and a money-counting machine.

Jacqueline Willoughby takes on NTUCB
It has been almost one year now since the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) held an extraordinary general meeting at which the Christian Workers Union (CWU) president, Floyd Neal, was elected to the post of president of the NTUCB. Prior to Neal’s election to the NTUCB presidency, however, there was the issue of back dues that the CWU had owed the NTUCB that led to its suspension in August 2013. Amandala is in possession of an exchange of letters between NTUCB First Vice President, Jacqueline Willoughby, and the NTUCB General Secretary, Patrick Balan. In her letter, Willoughby addressed the issue of her 1st Vice President post.

United States versus Andrew Bennett inches forward with verification of evidence
Attorney Andrew Bennett, for whom the United States Secretary of State has issued an extradition request to Belize Minister of Foreign Affairs, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court of Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser this morning, along with his legal team, for the formal verification of the evidence that the US has built against him for the seven counts of money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering for which he has been indicted in the US District Court of Puerto Rico by a US grand jury on July 2, 2015. When the hearing was called to order, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs foreign service officer, Jenina Urbina, took the witness stand and explained to the court that she is in charge of the South America Desk at the ministry and that she received some documents from the United States Government that were authenticated under the seal of Belize Ambassador to the US, Francisco Daniel Guterrez.

Weekend Warriors “A/B” Series 1 Race #2 of Sunday, February 4
This is a POINT SERIES of 4 Races which started last week Sunday, January 28. Unfortunately, I had a race scheduled last week in Valladolid, Mexico, so missed Race #1; but my teammate and buddy Warren Coye came in 2nd last week, so the team’s job was to defend him. Thing is, we have one of the smallest teams out there, so the 5 of us had to ride smart. As they blew the whistle, there was a vicious attack, and Team Santino’s best pacer, Daniel Cano, who is Weekend Warriors (WW) Time Trial Champion, got on the front and chased it down. After he caught the front runners, there was another attack; and after he caught that one, there was another.

PLB Week 4 results and standings
All four games in Week 4 of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) 2017-2018 Closing Season were scheduled for this past Sunday, but only three were played; the Wagiya FC vs Belmopan Bandits SC game at the Carl Ramos Stadium was postponed due to the field condition following heavy rains. In a close and controversial contest at the Ambergris Stadium, home standing San Pedro Pirates FC clinched a 2-1 victory over visiting BDF FC when Colombian import Carlos Pertuz blasted from point blank range past BDF goalie Tevin Gamboa. Highking Roberts had given the Pirates the early lead at the 16th minute, but Shane “Chucky” Flores caught Pirates goalie Yusef Guerra out of his goal and drove in the equalizer for BDF shortly after resumption of play at the 47th minute.

Chief’s Saturday Race results – February 3, 2018
After a week of constant rain and very little training, the sun finally peeped out this morning, and so did 42 riders for today’s race from Leslie’s thru Boom to the Philip Goldson (Northern) Highway Junction and back to OLD BELIZE for the finish. We chose this finish because the road is smooth, wide and straight; but most importantly, much safer, as the finish at Leslie’s is in terrible shape after all this rain. The 42 riders featured 25 Elites, 12 Weekend Warriors (WW), and 5 Juniors. At 7:19 a.m., we were off. Everyone seemed to be full of energy after a week of plenty rest, so the attacks were immediate and hard. Within a few miles, about 15 “heads of state” of the Belize cycling world separated themselves from the peloton, and would never be seen again. I got a puncture at Mile 10, so became an official and service man to the entire peloton.

Both races started at 8:30 a.m. Top “A/B” finishers: 1st Place – Mark Gentle (FT Williams, 1:42:10); 2nd Preston Martinez (Digicell-4G, st); 3rd Kirk Sutherland (Digicell-4G, st); 4th Warren Coye (Santino’s, st); 5th Santino Castillo (Santino’s, st, 1st “B” rider); 6th Alvan Gillett (Kulture Megabytes); 7th Roque Matus (M&M; Engineering); 8th Dean Belisle (Bel-Cal); 9th Hector Tzuleta (Valvoline, 2nd “B” rider); and 10th Sean Duncan (Smart, 3rd “B” rider).

Editorial: Where is home?
The election of a Black American, Barack Obama, to the presidency of the United States in 2008 had been seen by some observers as heralding a so-called post-racial third millennium in America. At the same time, scholars had been predicting that by the middle of the 21st century, White Americans would have become a numerical minority in the U.S., even though they would still essentially control the American economy. When you add to the two Obama presidencies and the demographic predictions for White minority status, the fact that White Americans had been losing a lot of jobs because of American corporations’ outsourcing of factories and jobs to the rest of the world, you can understand how the stage was set for the Donald Trump presidency, clearly the result of fears and bigotry in America’s White majority population.

They’re not ashamed about his game
It is quite interesting to watch the people called Democrats, the liberal wing in the USA, how they run the gamut, so to speak, to find a reason or reasons why the man Donald Trump is now the leader of their country. They go here, there, and everywhere, and ignore the stark fact of too much LGBT. It must be a serious thing over there, this furor about how the dastardly Russians infiltrated the American political machine and warped the minds of the gullible people. They accept that their people will swallow a whale, or an elephant, if you package them right. It’s not right to laugh at anyone (especially not right to laugh at your friends), but I think we’re allowed to smile when we think of the one that installs presidents in our region, the one who makes numberless attempts to disrupt the Cuban government, getting a dose of their own medicine.

Magistrate’s vehicle stolen and set on fire
The vehicle of a Belize City magistrate was stolen, and then set on fire. Magistrate Shanti Morrison, 34, of Ladyville, told police that she parked her Ford Escape in front of her house at about 6:00 Saturday evening. At about 6:00 Sunday morning, she checked for her vehicle and it was nowhere to be found. Police were called and the search for the vehicle began. Yesterday morning, the Ford Escape was found on Chetumal Street Extension, completely destroyed by fire.

Bus driver charged with wounding another bus driver
A fight between two bus drivers who work for the same company, Lopez shuttle, resulted in one of them, Manuel Alonzo, suffering a wound to his face and the other, Aldoray Flowers, 35, being charged with wounding. Flowers, a resident of 1058 Chancellor Street, West Landivar, wanted to plead guilty to the charge with an explanation when he appeared today before the Chief Magistrate, Sharon Fraser. He backed down on the guilty plea, however, when she told him that he could get a sentence of up to 7 years in prison for wounding.

Abel Lara, 21, committed to stand trial for unlawful sexual intercourse
At a preliminary inquiry that was held yesterday before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser without any consideration of the evidence, Abel Lara, 21, a resident of Ladyville charged with unlawful sexual intercourse, was committed to stand trial in the next session of the Supreme Court, which will commence on April 3. Before she committed him to stand trial, Chief Magistrate Fraser asked Lara if he had any witnesses he wished to call, and if so, to give her their names. Lara submitted the names of two witnesses, Sheree Robinson and Gerald Abraham.

Michael Lemus, 18, offered bail of $1,500
After a heated political confrontation out west last week, an unrepresented Michael Lemus, 18, appeared before Magistrate Aretha Ford today in the San Ignacio Magistrate’s Court. He pleaded not guilty to one count of aggravated assault and two counts of use of threatening words. He was offered bail of $1,500 and ordered to return to court on April 5, 2018. Police reports revealed that last Thursday, Earl Trapp, the mayor of Santa Ignacio-Santa Elena, reported that at around 6:15 p.m. he was campaigning with several councilors on Alta Vista Street in San Ignacio Town when a taxi with Benque Viejo Del Carmen license plates stopped a few feet from them.

Volcán de Fuego from Earth and space
Guatemala’s Volcán de Fuego began a new round of explosive activity on January 31, 2018. This volcano – located about 40 miles (70 km) west of Guatemala City – is known for its explosive activity, spreading ash plumes, and spectacular lava flows. This eruption was its first of 2018. It ended after about 20 hours of activity. Meanwhile, photographers on the ground were busy as well, taking in the dramatic show this volcano provides.

Impact Justice continues effort to increase regional pool of restorative practices trainers
The Canadian government funded Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (IMPACT Justice) project, is sponsoring a three-day training of trainers workshop in Belize City, Belize, from February 5 to 7, to certify six persons as restorative practices trainers. The workshop, which is the first part of the certification process, is being facilitated by the International Institute of Restorative Practices, Canada.

HISTORIC CROOKED TREE SANCTUARY MOU SIGNED ON WORLD WETLANDS DAY
The Forest Department, the Belize Audubon Society, and the Crooked Tree Village Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at promoting local stewardship and sustainable use of the resources in the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. The signing of the MOU took place in Crooked Tree Village on Friday, February 2nd, as part of the official World Wetlands Day celebrations, which was held under the theme “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”. The MOU charts a way forward for the future of the Sanctuary and the community’s development. It provides regulated access to the fishing resources from March to July, fosters greater local stewardship, and strengthens the alliance between the management agencies and the community.

Magistrate’s SUV Stolen, Torched
A family court magistrate's vehicle was stolen and set on fire this weekend. 34 year old Shanti Morrison's Ford Edge was seen on fire on Lake Independence Boulevard early on Sunday morning. The fire department responded to put it out at dawn, but, by that time, the vehicle had been completely destroyed - and it's still there this evening. The Magistrate reported that it had been stolen sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning from in front of her home in Vista Del Mar. It's a sensitive case because it involves a member of the judiciary - who vehicle was stolen and appears to have been deliberately torched. But, when police briefed the media this morning - at that time they had not identified the vehicle:

Maya’s March For The Slain Sisters
Last week, we told you about the backstory of Wilmer Escobar, the man who police have arrested and charged for the double murder of the sisters from Toledo, Crecencia and Josephina Oh. He's on remand at the Belize Central Prison, but there is a grieving family, and the communities in Toledo District that are still trying to make sense of this heinous crime - and make sure it never happens again. On Saturday evening, a group called "Walk For Justice", which was formed in the memory of the sisters, organized a demonstration with the support of the Maya Leaders Association and the Toledo Alcaldes Association. It started in San Jose Village, and all the participants visited the outskirts of the village where the sisters were murdered. There, they planted 2 crosses to remind everyone of the loss of life that happened at that location.

Contrabandidos Caught In Coro
Customs is prosecuting three men who it says are repeat contraband offenders. Customs enforcement caught Henry Diaz, Nathaniel Hinds and Lucio Salinas on Saturday evening in the Yo Chen area of the Corozal District. That is close to an illegal river crossing named Laguna - which is right behind Yo - Chen. They were in a van - which was loaded with contraband - including 55 sacks of Bola Roja flour, 15 cases of Suprerior and Dos Equis beer, 7 sacks white and red onions, 2 sacks potatoes, 2 plastic tanks with 15 gallons of gasoline and some Nutri-Leche milk.

PUMA Robbers Remanded
3 men have been remanded to prison for robbing the PUMA Gas station in Ladyville. 25-year-old Jose Cocom Jr, 19 year-old Kentroy McKoy and 21-year-old Edison Palacio were all charged with armed robbery. The trio was unrepresented in court and pleaded not guilty to the charge. Magistrate Khadeen Palmer denied them bail and they were remanded into custody until April 27th. It happened on January 31st. Cashier Adonis Serano was at the gas station when 3 men stormed in. One of men pointed a gun at Serano and took the money from the register. The men also snatched money from a customer. They ran off with $500 in total. Everything was captured on the surveillance camera.

Close Call On Kelly Street
There was a residential fire in Belize City this afternoon. At around 1:40, a small fire started at a downstairs residence on Kelly Street. No one was harmed, and thanks to the quick response of the fire department, the blaze was contained to a section of the wooden structure - which is squat in the middle of a congested nieghborhood. The investigation is still in the early stages but Fire Chief Ted Smith told us that the fire could have been a massive blaze but thanks to the quick response of the fire department and the residents it was contained quickly. Ted Smith, Belize National Fire Service Fire Chief: "The fire department immediately went into action containing the fire to the ground floor of that particular area we found on fire and extinguished said fire."

Family Looks For Missing Nationality Clerk
A 27 year old nationality clerk from Belmopan, Israel Perez, has been missing for a week and his family needs your help to find him. A relative says that he last spoke to Perez through text on last week Monday night. He said that Perez sent a text saying that he was on San Pedro and would be back this week. Well, he never came home. The family is trying to hold on to hope. Here is what police had to say. Alejandro Cowo, OC - CIB: "Rosita Perez of number 3840 Unity Blvd Belmopan City visited the Belmopan police station and made a report that her brother Israel Perez 27 year old Belizean has been missing since Friday of February 2018. He is a Hispanic ale person of clear descent and the information in regards to other details as regards to him has not come forward so far."

Only Weekend Violence Was City Shooting
As you can tell from the tone of the news so far tonight, the weekend was relatively calm except for one city shooting. 37 year old taxi man Carl Lamb was shot to the thigh in front of his Gladden Street home. It happened early Saturday morning and police have already charged a 15 year old for the crime. The head of CIB told us more at today's press briefing. Alejandro Cowo, OC - CIB: "On Saturday the 3rd of February 2018 sometime after 4:00am in the morning, police visited the KHMH where they observed a male person by the name of Carl Lamb, 37 year old Belizean taxi driver with an apparent gunshot wound to the left thigh. What police gather so far is that Mr. Lamb had just arrived at his house, he was just exiting his vehicle when he was approached by a person who was walking beside him and calling his name..."

Mother Claims Police Brutality
A city mother says police roughed up and pepper sprayed her son for no reason. It is an all too familiar story but this mother says it has been happening over and over again and no matter how many times she reports it, nothing is done. This time she says the police picked up her son, 20 year old Ulide Allen and took him near the Chetumal Bridge to beat on him. We met her outside the Raccoon Street police station and she told us more. Dorita Muschamp, Mother: "On Saturday night I left my son on Jasmine Street by a shop. By the time I arrived home in about 20 minutes, I got a call from my mom. My son was saying 'mom please come they tried to kill me, please come I can't see'. I ran out without any footwear and went to my mom's home. When I went there I saw my son in just boxers because my mom already took off his clothes to try bathe him and wash off the pepper spray. I asked him what happened, he said three police officers picked him up from off Tibruce Street and took him behind Chetumal Street where they tried to take him out the vehicle..."

Six Year Later, Locario Gets Off
In 2012, mother of 7, Hilda Locario was remanded for the attempted murder of a woman she had stabbed in the neck. Today, almost 6 years later, she finally got her freedom in the Supreme Court when he case ended in a nolle pros. The 42-year-old allegedly stabbed Shirley Leslie to the throat. After 6 years of court appearances, Locario - appeared before newly appointed Justice of the Supreme Court, Marilyn Williams to learn that the case is being abandoned by the prosecution.

To Avert Drunk Driving, Man Gets Assaulted
Today thirty-five-year-old bus driver Aldoray Flowers appeared in court charged with wounding. Flowers pled guilty to the charge but he had an explanation. He said that on the 1st of February his brother and bus owner Carlos Lopez sent him to take over the bus from Manuel Alonzo because Alonzo was intoxicated. According to Flowers when he got there Alonzo slapped him in the face and he reacted by punching Alonzo in his face and head, causing a wound to Alonzo's face.

Ashcroft Alliance: Ain’t No Sunshine
3 months ago, we told you about the final fight between the Government of Belize and the Ashcroft Alliance over BTL, or be more accurate, the final fight that we know about. It's over the company, Sunshine Holdings, which used to be part of the Ashcroft Alliance. Our research says that back in 2005, under the Musa Administration, Social Security granted a special loan to the company of 10 million dollars under highly concessionary terms. Sunshine, under the Alliance, used that money to acquire shares in BTL. When the Government nationalized the telephone company in 2009, it also acquired Sunshine's shares, and with that, came the 10 million-dollar debt to the SSB. So, now that the BTL settlement of about a half a billion dollars in compensation has been paid to the Alliance, Sunshine, which is now Government controlled, wants the Ashcroft Alliance, specifically, the BTL employees trust, to pay back some of that money to them, at least to cover the loan to the SSB.

PUC By The Numbing Numbers
Last week, we showed you the comments of John Avery, the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, when he answered to allegations that there was reckless spending at the PUC and over-payment of the 6 members of the PUC Board. Well, to strengthen his arguments, he released the final audited statements ending in March of 2017. On the Balance sheet, under the line item, current assets, it says that the PUC had just under 1.25 million dollars in the bank at the end of March 2016. By March 2017, that decreased by about a quarter million.

In The Event Of an Oil Spill
Today the Department of the Environment held an Oil Spill contingency plan meeting. The meetings focus was preparing for an oil spill. Even though an oil spill does not seem likely to happen here in our waters especially after the oil moratorium was signed, Chief Environmental Officer Martin Alegria says the plan is still a necessity for Belize, even if we are not the ones that start the spill. Sahar Vasquez, reporter: "I know Belize has kind of exhausted a lot of its oil options why is a contingency plan necessary at this time?" Martin Alegria, Department of Environment/Chief Environmental Officer: "Well, a contingency plan to address oil spill has been there since 1996. We updated it in 2001, 2003 with the assistance of CDEA Caribbean agency. With time things change development occurs and technology changes. We saw the need in 2014 to update this National Oil Spill response."

Canal Playing It Too Close To Climate Resilient Roadway?
We also asked Alegria about a pair of canals that have been dug near to the newly reconstructed Phillip Goldson Highway. Now, the highway was designed - at great cost - with climate change mitigation measures in place. And that's because it is on a vulnerable strip of land between The Belize river and the Caribbean sea. But now - a new property development for a private gated community - has brought two canals in from the sea to within a couple hundred feet of the highway. This is at mile 7 on the highway. Today we asked the Chief Environmental Officer - who lives in Ladyville whether this is has been environmentally cleared - he claimed he had no specific knowledge of the project: Martin Alegria, Department of Environment/Cheif Environmental Officer: "There is plans or at least ideas concepts of dewatering or assisting in the flooding."

Referees Ran Out Of Gas
On Saturday over 30 referees gathered at the Marion Jones Stadium for a physical fitness test conducted by a visiting FIFA Instructor. When it was done, only 5 assistant referees, and 3 referees had passed. The test was designed for international referees - and the FFB says the results should be seen as an incentive for the refereeing community to keep training to become physically fit.

The Museum At 16
Today the Museum of Belize celebrated its 16th anniversary. In honour of that, the museum opened a brand new temporary art exhibit for the public. The exhibit features the art works of different Belizean Artists ranging from contemporary art to photography. For the rest of the month, the museum will invite students to visit them and participate in art lessons by the artists. To end off the celebration the museum is also inviting students to create artwork of their own at the Street Art Festival on February 24th.

Why did the people of Xunantunich choose to build their city on top of the ridge? Is it possible that they felt closer to the Gods? If that is so, why didn’t they build it to the south in the Vaca plateau, which is in view from the top of the tallest building at Xunantunich? Wanted for the murder of Melvin Almendarez, Jordan Bacchus is arrested in Canada
Canadian fugitive Jordan Bacchus, wanted for the murder of island resident Melvin Almendarez, was arrested in Ontario Canada on February 2nd on unrelated charges. Bacchus was detained along with a woman during a drug bust at a residence in northern Ontario by the Greater Subdury Police. After being processed for the drug offense, Sudbury Police state that he can then be extradited to Belize. Melvin Almendarez was found dead on May 6, 2016, at a feeder road in Southern Ambergris Caye. During the initial investigations, Bacchus was detained as the prime person of interest since he was the last person seen with Almendarez. He was also charged with Possession of Controlled Drugs upon his arrest. However, he was later released on bail. A week later Police issued a warrant for his arrest, but Bacchus had apparently left the country and remained at large.

Man Wanted For Melvin Almendarez Murder In San Pedro Detained In Toronto Canada
Investigations into the vicious killing of San Pedro football star and popular coach, Melvin Almendarez, 34, in May 2016, lead to the arrest of Jordan Bacchus, 32. He was released on a drug charge but later fled the country after strong evidence from the police indicated that Bacchus could be linked to his murder. On February 3, 2018, the Toronto Sun reported that Bacchus has been arrested in Canada after a drug bust. Melvin Almendarez had been beaten and shot in his abdomen and investigations led them to the victim’s friend, Jordan Bacchus, 32, a Canadian who is wanted for questioning. The Police took Bacchus into custody after Almendarez was found dead, but only because they had found him in possession of cannabis, so they charged him for possession of the controlled drugs. He was released on self-bail.

MOH continues crackdown on pharmaceuticals
This week, the Ministry of Health continued its efforts to strengthen controls on pharmaceuticals in Belize by publishing its first list of over the counter medications for general use. The list contains 27 line items citing specific medications or specific classes of medications which includes things like petroleum jelly, Ibuprofen, paracetamol, mineral oil, oral vitamins, oral rehydration salts, Methyl salicylate, and isopropyl alcohol. “Note that this is a provisional first list and the Director of Health Services will be reviewing this list continuously while making necessary modifications as we aim to keep the safety of the consumers as our primary principle,” the Ministry said.

Today marks the 12th celebration of World Cancer Day, a global event used to raise awareness about various aspects of cancer including the most common types and risk factors World Cancer Day, celebrated annually since 2006, is the brainchild of the Union for International Cancer Control and endorsed by the World Health Organization. During the day, government bodies and NGO’s hold various activities to highlight the fight against cancer either by supporting those who are battling it or saluting those that have died because of it.

My heart is so full…but I also just wanna cry all the time. These are not the sentiments one would expect from Simone Biles, the greatest gymnast to ever live. In public, the four-time Olympic gold medalist lights up every room she walks into or red carpet she struts down with her infectious smile and sports-legend charisma. She may be 4-foot-eight, but she is truly larger than life. (Having all-too-briefly basked in her presence, I can attest to this.) Lately, however, the 20-year-old has been coming to terms with the abuse she suffered at the hands of Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics doctor who stands accused of molesting over 265 girls—including numerous members of the USA Women’s Gymnastics team—and who will spend the rest of his life in prison. Biles came forward with her story on January 15th, in a note posted to Twitter accompanied with the #MeToo. It read, in part: “Most of you know me as a happy, giggly, and energetic girl. But lately…I’ve felt a bit broken and the more I try to shut off the voice in my head the louder it screams. I am not afraid to tell my story anymore. I too am one of the many survivors that was sexually abused by Larry Nassar…After hearing the brave stories of my friends and other survivors, I know that this horrific experience does not define me. I am much more than this.”

Tip from North Bay police led to arrest
It was a tip from North Bay's Street Crime Investigation Unit that led Greater Sudbury Police to arrest a man Friday who is wanted in Belize for murder, North Bay Police report. Greater Sudbury Police say it turns out the accused man is wanted for armed robbery by Toronto cops and has been sought by homicide investigators in Belize for nearly two years. Officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Kelvin St., Drug Squad Det.-Sgt. James Killeen said in a statement released Saturday, explaining a man and a woman from Toronto were arrested.

Freshwater Crocodile found on Ambergris Caye
On Friday, January 26th ACES (American Crocodile Education Sanctuary) departed on their usual evening crocodile excursion hoping to spot, catch, and tag an American Crocodile to add to their ongoing population survey, but what they ended up catching has left them baffled. Chris Summers, ACES Daily Operations Manager and Field Biologist, was educating guests while surveying around Captain Shark’s boatyard canal when he spotted a croc. He safely and humanely caught the crocodile, brought him inside the boat, and realized upon examination that what he had was a freshwater Morelet’s Crocodile which are only found on the mainland, not the saltwater species we have on the island. Though both species are native to Belize, the saltwater American Crocodiles can survive and thrive in both salt water and fresh water, while the freshwater Morelet’s Crocodile cannot. Morelet’s Crocodiles do not possess the ability to tolerate saltwater well and can rapidly dehydrate when exposed to these environments, eventually leading to death.

MARIJUANA PLANTATION
At 2:00 p.m., on 2.2.2018, Police conducted a search about four miles in Blue Creek Village, Orange Walk District which led to the discovery of a marijuana plantation containing about 3000 marijuana plants ranging from 2ft. to 5ft. in height. No one was found in the area and the plants were uprooted and destroyed by fire.

It could not have been more fun and exciting to have collaborated these efforts with over 50 of our young Corozal residents, including our Pioneers from Centro Escolar Mexico Junior College, Corozal Junior College Eagles Enviromental Club, Ryan Rivera (Oceana Belize - Corozal's Representative), Yvette Sanker Riverol - Moderator, CJC Eagles Environmental Club, Caribbean Youth Environmental Network, Bruce Steege and wife Colleen Steege, Connie (our apologies for leaving your title out) and everyone else that came out to help. There were many of you. YOU ALL ROCK! Thank you! Thank you! We collected a bunch of discarded tires from our bay, glass bottles, plastic and styrofoam.

Belizean Patriots: Nadia Evadne Cattouse
Nadia Evadne Cattouse was born in British Honduras on 2nd November 1924 (93 years old). Her father Albert Cattouse was a civil servant who went on to become Deputy Prime Minister of British Honduras. She is a Belizean-British actress, singer and songwriter. She is best known for her acting roles in many British television programmes including Play for Today, Crown Court, Dixon of Dock Green and Johnny Jarvis. As a singer in the 1960s she performed at Les Cousins folk and blues club in Greek Street, London, and appeared on television programs including the BBC’s Sing Along and Hootenanny. On the folk scene she was a contemporary of Julie Felix and Fairport Convention, and was called by Melody Maker "one of the giants of the folk-song revival in Britain". With Robin Hall and Jimmie Macgregor she made Songs of Grief & Glory (1967).Her album Earth Mother (1970) was partly recorded at the 1969 Edinburgh Festival. Among other compilations, Cattouse features on Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil Up (2005), singing "Long Time Boy", and on the 1972 album Club Folk 2 (Peg Records PS3), singing "B. C. People" and "All Around My Grandmother's Floor".

Police make weekend drug seizures
The Belize Police Department has destroyed a marijuana plantation and arrested four persons for drug trafficking in separate incidents this weekend. During routine operations, Police searched an area about four miles into Blue Creek in the Orange Walk District, where they fund the plantation, which contained about 3000 plants ranging between two and five feet tall. Police uprooted and destroyed the plants with fire. Officers did not find anyone on the scene, so no charges were laid in respect to the plantation.

GOB to host oil spill disaster consultations
In the upcoming week, the Government of Belize will gather with with non-governmental organizations and private sector partners for a consultation aimed at improving the country’s capability to respond to an oil spill. GOB, through the Department of the Environment in the ministry of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment & Sustainable Development, and Immigration (MAFFESDI), will host the two-day consultation at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel on February 5 and 6, with the end goal of improving the Working Draft of the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan. Southern Villagers prepare to walk for justice
Residents of San Roman and San Jose Village are preparing to hold a peaceful demonstration tomorrow, calling for justice to be served in light of the gruesome double murder of Crisencia and Josephine Oh. The Walk for Justice is Scheduled to begin with a ceremony on the outskirts of outskirts of San Jose at 3:00 p.m., followed by a candlelight vigil at 4:00 p.m. at the San Antonio football field where the main activity will be held featuring short presentations from community leaders. The Walk for Justice Organizing Committee is calling on residents of the Toledo district to attend and join the fight to against violent crime in the district.

Sudbury drug bust leads to arrest of man wanted for Belize murder, Toronto robbery
Jordan Bacchus, 28, sought for murder in Central America, was nabbed along with a woman during a drug bust in Northern Ontario on Friday. Greater Sudbury Police say it turns out the accused man is wanted for armed robbery by Toronto cops and has been sought by homicide investigators in Belize for nearly two years. Bacchus is wanted by cops in Belize for the brutal killing of Melvin Almendarez in May 2016. The San Pedro Sun has reported the 31-year-old local athlete was shot to death and then run over by a golf cart. Bacchus was taken into custody at the time on drug charges but was released 48 hours later. A week later investigators issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with the murder but by then it’s believed Bacchus had fled the country and returned to Canada — even though he had surrendered his passport to cops.

SBC New Creation Taking "John: His Story" To Belize
The Steinbach Bible College New Creation Drama team is performing John: His Story throughout southern Manitoba as a fundraiser to bring the same play to Belize. Director Richard Klassen says this will be a totally new experience for the New Creation team as they would normally end their year with a tour somewhere in Canada. He adds the trip to Belize will be an excellent new mission opportunity. “We will be working with a number of church groups as well as Belizean Camping Experience and school groups in the country to do workshops and presentations, it will be great for us as a team to stretch us and it will be great for them because there are a number of alumni down in Belize that we can connect with and hopefully support and encourage.”

Maya civilization was much vaster than known, thousands of newly discovered structures reveal
Archaeologists have spent more than a century traipsing through the Guatemalan jungle, Indiana Jones-style, searching through dense vegetation to learn what they could about the Maya civilization that was one of the dominant societies in Mesoamerica for centuries. But the latest discovery — one archaeologists are calling a “game changer” — didn't even require a can of bug spray. Scientists using high-tech, airplane-based lidar mapping tools have discovered tens of thousands of structures constructed by the Maya: defense works, houses, buildings, industrial-size agricultural fields, even new pyramids. The findings, announced Thursday, are already reshaping long-held views about the size and scope of the Maya civilization. “This world, which was lost to this jungle, is all of a sudden revealed in the data,” said Albert Yu-Min Lin, an engineer and National Geographic explorer who worked on a television special about the new find. “And what you thought was this massively understood, studied civilization is all of a sudden brand new again,” he told the New York Times

Lasers Reveal a Maya Civilization So Dense It Blew Experts’ Minds
They were hidden there, all this time, under the cover of tree canopies in the jungles of northern Guatemala: tens of thousands of structures built by the Maya over a millennium ago. Not far from the sites tourists already know, like the towering temples of the ancient city of Tikal, laser technology has uncovered about 60,000 homes, palaces, tombs and even highways in the humid lowlands. The findings suggested an ancient society of such density and interconnectedness that even the most experienced archaeologists were surprised. “Everywhere that we looked, there was more settlement than we expected,” said Thomas Garrison, a National Geographic explorer and an archaeologist at Ithaca College. “We knew there was going to be more, but the scale of it really blew our minds.” Researchers found the structures by shooting lasers down from planes to pierce the thick foliage and paint a 3-D picture of the ground below. The technology is called Light Detection and Ranging, or lidar.

2017 Police Statistics show a decrease in major crimes countrywide
The Belize Police Department has released the official crime statistics for 2017. Figures show that while major crimes experienced a decrease of 6.8% countrywide, there was an increase in homicides. Overall, 1,992 crimes were reported to the police department across the country. San Pedro Town recorded a total of 100 major crimes, with a decrease of 38%, compared to 2016. 2017 registered 142 homicides total, four more than in 2016. The official report also showed a decrease in arrests made for murder crimes, with only 54 arrests reported countrywide, nine arrests less than in the previous year. San Pedro reported eight fatalities in 2017, the same as 2016 and 2015.

Hundreds of island residents and visitors enjoyed finger-licking BBQ at Estel’s Dine by the Sea’s 7th Annual BBQ Cook-off Tournament held on Tuesday, January 30th. This year’s competition featured nine grill masters, including: Ali Rush, Charles Worthington, Rick Saager, Amy Knox, Keith, Palapa Bar& Grill, Jim Gochenour, Sergio, and Kevin Urbina. The annual competition is also a means ofraising funds for the Sunshine Scholarship Foundation in San Pedro Town. With approximately 195 tickets sold, attendees not only enjoyed an amazing BBQ lunch but also live musical performances and special drinks. 50/50 raffles took place to raise more funds, and some winners generously donated their prize money right back to the Foundation.

Belize Defence Force welcomes new commander on its 40th anniversary
The Belize Defence Force (BDF) celebrated its 40th anniversary with military ceremonies and displays, along with an open day fair for the public at their headquarters in Ladyville north of Belize City. The celebration began on Friday, January 26th with an official ceremony that saw the swearing in of a new BDF Commander and the graduation of 89 new soldiers. The following day, an all-day fair welcomed civilians into the military complex for a fun-filled event with military exhibits, live music, entertainment and of course lots to eat and drink. The formalities of the occasion started on Friday afternoon, as newly promoted Brigadier General, Steven Ortega became the eighth commander of the Force. He took over from retired Brigadier General David Jones who held the post since 2013. Thereafter, the military top brass was joined by proud families in the graduation ceremony of a new group of soldiers that have been training for the past four months.

Developer north of San Pedro Town removes illegal beach fence after public complaints
Residents from a subdivision along the beach north of San Pedro Town are relieved that a fence used to obstruct vehicle passage on the beach for quite some time was removed on Wednesday, January 31st. They claim that the fence, which extended to the shoreline was erected by one of their neighbors, who is a developer in the area. The residents stated that because there is no designated access to the main road in their area they have no choice but to drive through the beach to access their homes. The presence of the fence became a frustrating inconvenience and those affected denounced the illegal move by the developer in blocking national land (beaches), which should remain accessible to everyone. They claim the developer initially did not consider its removal, but after being confronted with the facts of breaching the public land law, the fence was immediately reduced to accommodate the 66 feet required by law between any beach property and the water level.

Two Guatemalan Fishermen Caught Fishing Illegally In Southern Belize
Park Rangers of the Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) along with personnel of the Belize Coast Guard arrested two Guatemalans who were fishing illegally near the Rio Grande in Southern Belize. The fishermen tried to escape, but the patrol team was equipped and motivated to apprehend them. The two fishers had no documents for fishing in Belize and fished with illegal fishing gear with the marine reserve (over 2 miles of long lines with 400 hooks in water and additional long lines with 413 hooks in their possession).

Representatives from various Government and Non-Governmental Organizations, Private Sector,and Academia associated with Disaster Risk Management and Oil Spill Response will meet at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel, Belize City on 5th & 6th February 2018, as part of the national consultation process to review and make recommendations to improve a Working Draft of the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan. The Department of the Environment (DOE) within the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries,and Environment & Sustainable Development, and Immigration (MAFFESDI) commenced implementation of the Consultancy to Update and Align the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan of Belize (NOSCP) in August of last year. The overall objective is to strengthen prevention, preparedness and coordinated emergency response nationally for an oil spill event in terrestrial,aquatic and marine environment, and align the plan to meet international standards for Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC).

The Hokeb Ha Vase
The Hokeb Ha Vase became the logo for the Institute of Archaeology. It was discovered in 1973 inside the Hokeb Ha Cave in Toledo. It features two young Lord's in conversation, but what they are talking about still remains a mystery. It will be displayed at the Milwaukee Public Museum for the Maya Hidden World's Revealed exhibit, which opens on February 10, 2018.

Oil Spill Workshop
Due to several calls and messages of concern, please note that the Oil Spill Workshop being coordinated by the Department of Environment next week is to address the national response (capacity) to handle incidents at land and sea. The marine incident scenarios include incidents of ship collision (with other ships as well as the Belize Barrier Reef); the exportation of crude (from the onshore production) as well as the importation of refined fuel products, all of which can result in devastating pollution. Offshore oil exploration and extraction is not on the agenda given the passage of the offshore oil moratorium legislation, which became law on December 30th 2017. We thank you for your vigilance and commit to updating you in this regard. Oceana will be one of the observers at the workshop on February 5th-6th. Our collective leadership and continued vigilance will ensure the stability and sustainability of our collective future.

Political Friction Leads to Fight In Cayo
It seems the municipal election fever has political operatives a little hot-blooded - 18 year old PUP supporter Michael Lemus claims San Ignacio UDP Mayor Earl Trapp and his councilors beat him up pretty badly yesterday evening. Lemus' account is that at 6:15 he and a relative drove past Trapp and his team on their campaign trail. According to Lemus, he proclaimed his support for the PUP and Trapp and his team dragged him out of the vehicle and beat him up. Here is a phone interview with Lemus' mother. Voice of: Aranelly Lemus, mother: "What he told me was that Trapp and the councilors attacked him." Reporter: "Did he say why they attacked him, if this is the case?" Voice of: Aranelly Lemus, mother: "He told me he shouted 'PUP got my back, they will win', and right there the problem started."

Attorney For Extradition Back To Court
2 weeks ago, we showed you the arraignment of Andrew Bennett, who becomes the first Belizean attorney to face extradition to the United States. They want him to stand trial in the District of Puerto Rico for 7 counts of money laundering. At the last hearing, the issue was whether he should be granted bail while the Chief Magistrate reviews the documents, to decide whether or not he should be extradited. This morning the case went back before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer, and this time it was all about the preliminary formalities. Solicitor General Nigel Hawke is trying to ensure that the extradition procedure is followed to the letter of the Extradition Act and treaty with the United States.

Church Pulls a Disappearing Act in UNIBAM Appeal
It's been a little over a 1 year and 5 months since Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin delivered the landmark ruling in the Caleb Orozco/UNIBAM case, legalizing gay sex between consenting adults. But, an appeal of the judgment is still pending. Viewers will remember that there was an outburst of negative reactions to the decision, with the loudest protests coming from the churches. They pushed Government to appeal, asserting that they would seek to overturn the ruling. But, tonight, the news is that the appeal case could take place without them. First, the Evangelicals wanted to enter the case as interested parties, but because they were not a part of the case at its inception, they were unable to participate. So, the substantive appeal of the Section 53 judgment, which has the possibility of overturning the Chief Justice's decision completely, fell to the Catholic Church.

Alleged Killer Wilmar Was A Juvenile Criminal
All week we've been reporting on 20 year old Wilmer Escobar, the Bella Vista resident accused of killing the "Oh" sisters - mercilessly chopping them to death. Well, it turns out that he's also Wilmar Guzman - who's been in trouble with the law since he was a teenager. A check in our archives shows that when he was 16 years old and living in San Juan, Stann Creek - he was sentenced to serve 6 month at the Wagner Youth facility for theft. That was in 2013. But, he escaped by scaling the facility's fence during a shift changeover. He was recaptured and served his time. Sometime after that he moved to Bella Vista - and on the night of Sunday January 21st he allegedly met the sisters Cresencia and Josephine and chopped them to death. He is also believed to have raped them. Police have strong evidence against him - including a confession and items stolen from the girls - as well as scratches on his face and neck.

Security Guard Remanded For Stabbing Another Security Guard
Last night we told you about 34-year-old Kenrick Valencio, the security guard who was stabbed in front of the Novelo's Bus Terminal early on Thursday morning. Today, the man accused of stabbing him - another security guard named John Brackett was charged for Attempted Murder. Magistrate Michelle Trapp read the charge which alleged that the 49 year old Brackett attempted to murder Valencio with the use of a deadly weapon. No plea was taken, but Magistrate Trapp asked him if he had any special reasons why he should be granted bail. He asked the court to consider that he is a diabetic, and that he is also a dedicated father who works hard and has a job as the sole provider for his family.

Wetlands Are a Wondrous Thing
"Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future" is the theme at this year's World Wetlands Day. The special day was celebrated in Belize at one of the country's most celebrated wetlands in Crooked Tree. But, not only a wetland - it was an opportunity to forge a truce between the conservationists and the community. Sahar Vasquez found out more. Today residents of Crooked Tree and members of the conservation community gathered in a small classroom in Crooked Tree to celebrate World Wetlands Day. Wetlands are not generally something you will fund on a tourist brochure or a bucket list, but they do hold great importance in protecting Belize from flood waters, and that was the idea behind today's ceremony.

Man Accused of Aggravated Assault While facing Murder Charge
Nelson Henry got off a murder charge last week Wednesday, and in only 9 days time, he was back before the court today for unlawful imprisonment and aggravated assault charges. The alleged victims, who are 2 young boys, say that on Monday, January 14, Henry and others broke into their home in Burrell Boom Village, and held them against their will. The victims say that in the home invasion, Henry and the alleged accomplices then stole a few kitchen knives and 2 machetes, all to a total value of $45. You may be wondering how it is that Henry is accused of committing a crime while he was still accused of murder. Well, Henry was out on bail since September 2017, when the prosecution's murder case against him started falling apart.

Dion Would Not Do Double Duty Like Darrell
Yesterday, we showed you the UDP's manifesto launch for its Belize City slate. But one burning question we had for the man at the head of that slate is what kind of Mayor he'll be. His predecessor Darrrell Bradley was a part -time mayor who juggled his time between his private law office and the Mayor's office. The voters seemed just fine with it - since we had brought it to light early in his first term - and he was easily elected for a second term. No Saving Wooden Home In Santa Elena
There was nothing the San Ignacio Fire Department could do to save a wooden house that caught fire early this morning. It happened at around 4:30 in the Santa Cruz area when the 500 square foot structure was completely destroyed. It was the residence of a market vendor. Initial assessments say that the blaze may have originated from an electrical source.

Coffins, Skeletal Remains In The Sea
7News has obtained an unusual video. It is reportedly captured in this area - about 5 miles due north of Ladyville along the Belize District coastline. As first reported in the Guardian newspaper, It shows 7 coffins along with skeletal remains in shallow waters in an area known as Little Rocky Point. Apparently, the property owner had gone for some water recreation when he came upon the disturbing sight. When we called the Department of Archeology they say they are looking for the area but have not found it yet. They do plan to investigate it and determine the origins of the coffins. The area is known to have significant historical sites - but we note that. We'll tell you when the Institute of Archeology does find out something.

Mexico Wants Belizean Beef
Belize and Mexico continue to share good neighborly relations - and as you heard the Ambassador say last night - Belizeans spend tens of millions of dollars in Chetumal annually. But the trade relationship is imbalanced because Belize - historically - has had a hard time exporting legally into Mexico. Now, there's a whole lot of illegal cigarettes and cattle going into that country from Belize - but doing it the right way has proved challenging. That is the subject of a partial scope trade agreement that's been on the negotiating table for many years. Yesterday, the Mexican Ambassador told the media that Mexico wants Belize's beef:...

Measles Not Here So Why The Scare?
Earlier this week the Ministry of Health put out a public information notice on measles - after a single case appeared in Guatemala. It could pose a threat to Belize - but even the CEO in the Ministry of Health said the chance of that is remote:... Dr. Ramon Figueroa - CEO. Ministry of Health: "We have not had a measles I think since 1991. So for us it's mostly trying to keep an infectious disease out of the country. Remember that measles while we grew up getting measles and all the other vaccines preventable diseases, there are some potential risk associated with measles, encephalitis - they are rare but they can happen. It's mostly public health reaction so it's best to prevent, if you can, the introduction of an infectious disease back into the country."

Virulent Strain of Flu Not In Belize
Figueroa also commented on the status the seasonal flu in Belize. It's typical of this time of year - but it's newsworthy right now because in the states - an especially strong flu has killed 53 children. That's the H3N2 strain - which Figueroa says did make only a single appearance in Belize:... Dr. Ramon Figueroa, CEO, Ministry of Health: "Late last year we had actually a group from the Ministry of Health and the Karl Heusner meet because it was being reported that we had an excessive amount of cases, of virulent cases at the KHMH." "We had had a report of an H3N2 strain sometime in February last year and we had a case that was exposed to the US, came to Belize ended up at KHMH and died. Again as things have it I think we didn't follow proper procedure in terms of sampling we are still investigating the case I think part of CDC's role right now will be to follow up on that case."

TB Detection, Not Incidence Up
We also asked Figueroa about the prevalence of tuberculosis in persons with HIV, or living with AIDS. There are reports of an increased number of TB related deaths. TB is known to be especially deadly in persons who have an impaired immune system. Dr. Figueroa says it's not that there are more cases of TB - just that there is a greater rate of detection: Jules Vasquez: "Is there any rise in the number of TB cases related to HIV infection?" Dr. Ramon Figueroa, CEO, Ministry of Health: "Rise, I think we have been detecting more cases. I wouldn't say it's a rise. Remember now we also have the capability for quick diagnosis through equipment now that we have the gene expert - that we have procured and distributed in some of the region. So we have a better diagnostic capability. I wouldn't say we have an increase in the numbers. I think we have been detecting more cases."

Public Dialysis Continues
And, lastly, we asked Figueroa about the state of dialysis machines in the public healthcare system. We know that over the years the present machines have depreciated significantly- even as the number of persons with end stage renal failure continues to climb. Figueroa says the Taiwanese are helping with technical support - and dialysis machines should continue to be available at public facilities: Dr. Ramon Figueroa, CEO, Ministry of Health: "We just did an assessment with the help of the Taiwanese. We have an ongoing kidney project [Renal Project] and we got some expert to come in and do an assessment of both the KHMH and the Loma Luz services being provided and compare in terms of qualities. We were pleasantly supplied that the qualities between both of them however, yes through the government subsidies that has been given to Karl Heuser and Loma Luz. We only have spots for 15 and we know we have a long waiting list.."

And, finally, tonight, there is a battle for the basketball soul of Belize City. We know all about the Belize Hurricanes - but now, a new franchise, the Belize Defenders wants to take away their crowns as Kings of the City. The Defenders play their opening game tonight at the SCA Auditorium against the Orange Walk Running Rebels. The team manager had some serious trash talk for his cross town rivals today:.. The Hurricanes and the Defenders will meet later in the season to settle the battle for city supremacy on the court. It was to have been the first game of the season but it got rained out.

Anti-Gay Preacher banned from Jamaica
Steven Anderson is a preacher from the US and he is known for his anti-gay lectures. However, recently he is known as the preacher who the Jamaican Government banned from entering their country. The controversial pastor is considered a hate preacher because of his comments on several issues, including the 2016 shooting of 49 people inside the Pulse gay nightclub in Orland, Florida. He has also been accused of calling for the execution of gays by stoning, and has asserted that women should not work, lead in church or dress how they want.

Catholic Church loses attorney for Section 53 appeal case
On Wednesday Executive Director for United Belize Advocacy Movement (UNIBAM),Caleb Orozco, along with his attorneys appeared before the Justices of the Court of Appeal. In 2016 the Supreme Court ruled that Section 53 of the Constitution of Belize was unconstitutional. The ruling was appealed by the Catholic Church of Belize as an interested party and the Attorney General’s Office appealed a particular section of the ruling. According to Orozco, a date for substantive arguments was expected to be set.

Andrew Bennett’s extradition request laid before the court
Attorney Andrew Bennett, who is wanted by the US Government, appeared before Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser along with his attorney Anthony Sylvestre this morning. The US has requested for Bennett to be extradited to the US territory of Puerto Rico where he is wanted for money laundering charges, allegations which Bennett denies. Today in court, the extradition file was laid before the court and Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jenina Urbina, testified. Urbina told the court that she received the extradition file while she was assigned to the US desk.

Belmopan resident fined 10K for 79.5 grams of weed
A man has been ordered to pay ten thousand dollars after being arrested for drug trafficking. If twenty eight year old Mateo Gonzalez does not pay they amount he will spend three years behind bars. Earlier this week, police searched Gonzalez’s residence on Kaimat Street in the Maya Mopan Area of Belmopan. There they found 79.5 grams of marijuana. He was taken before a Belmopan Magistrate yesterday when he was officially arraigned and fined.
