2011 Year in Review - 1st installment: January to June
The headlines for the first half of 2011 were dominated, as they were the year before, by heart-wrenching stories of the all too frequent murders that have put the Old Capital under a state of virtual siege. At roughly 120 so far this year, the murder rate is almost eclipsing the 129 cases reported in 2011—although there is optimism in some quarters that 2011 will perhaps see a slight reprieve from the brutal killings of the year past.

Soldier shoots 3 women; 2 die
Anacleta Pech’s other daughter, Ana Julia Clarita Cortez, was shot to death... Police are investigating a double murder and an attempted murder in the remote village of Carmelita, Orange Walk District, but the gunman responsible is presently beyond the reach of the law.

From The Publisher
In the old days Christmas was a time of excesses in the old capital, one of the reasons, the main one, being that the bulk of the working class had accumulated wealth during their long, tough months in the mahogany camps in the Cayo and Orange Walk forests. A second reason for the excesses was that the workers knew that if they ran broke, they could get an advance on the next mahogany season’s pay from whichever mahogany contractor was their boss.

A Quick Look at Maya Astronomy
Today’s winter solstice, December 21st 2011, marks a year until the day the Maya Long Count Calendar ends, and what many believe is the end of the world. Many credit the Maya for such prediction of doom, but the reality is that the Mayas never mentioned the “end of the world” in 2012 in their calendars, hieroglyphs, or codices. (I wrote a post that goes deeper into what the Mayas really said about 2012.)
